Letter from the President
校 长 致 辞
It is my pleasure to present this overview of Michigan
State University’s ongoing relationship with
institutions in China. The purpose of this publication
is to illustrate the breadth and continued success of
our cooperative and exchange programs with academic
institutions in China.
In the following pages, you will find examples of how
Michigan State University is deepening its engagement in
China. Michigan State University has a long and proud history
developing institutional partnerships in China. We sent the
first official MSU delegation to China in September 1980.
One of the achievements resulting from this early endeavor
was the publication of Feeding A Billion, an influential book
about China’s agricultural developments, co-authored by
professors from Michigan State University and our partner
Chinese institutions.
In recent years, we launched the “MSU China Initiative” to
expand and enhance our strategic relationships with Chinese
institutions. As part of this initiative, we have developed
new joint education and research programs, provided
consulting services, and transferred advanced technology
to our Chinese colleagues. One such joint program included
assisting in the construction of a portable athletic field for
the National Stadium to be used during the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games. Michigan State is very proud to have been a
part of this very high-profile and exciting project.
MSU’s relationship with China extends to our campus
in East Lansing as well. Currently we have more than 700
Chinese graduate students and visiting scholars on campus.
Moreover, the number of first year undergraduate students
from China has increased from just nine in 2005 to more than
250 in 2007. Many faculty members are actively engaged
in teaching and research programs at Chinese partner
institutions in the areas of education, environment, food and
agriculture, and health care, just to name a few.
This brief overview does not tell the entire story of
our involvement in China. We do hope that it provides an
overview of Michigan State University’s deep commitment to
strengthening our relationship with the students, institutions,
and people of China.

流 的 广 度 和 持 续 性 。
通 过 本 书 的 文 章 , 您 能 看 到 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 如 何 与 中
国 加 强 关 系 的 范 例 。 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 在 与 中 国 各 机 构 发 展
建 立 伙 伴 关 系 上 有 着 悠 久 和 令 人 骄 傲 的 历 史 , 早 在 1980 年
9 月 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 就 向 中 国 派 出 了 第 一 个 正 式 代 表 团 。 早
期 努 力 的 成 果 之 一 是 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 与 中 国 合 作 机 构 的 教
授 们 合 作 著 述 《 温 饱 十 亿 人 口 », 这 是 一 本 关 于 中 国 农 业 发
展 的 很 有 影 响 的 著 作 。
近 年 来 , 我 们 创 办 了 “ 密 西 根 州 立 大 学 中 国 项 目 启 动 工
程 ”, 扩 大 并 加 强 我 们 与 中 国 各 机 构 的 战 略 伙 伴 关 系 。 作 为
该 项 目 的 一 部 分 , 我 们 建 立 了 联 合 办 学 和 合 作 研 究 项 目 , 提
供 咨 询 服 务 , 进 行 技 术 转 让 等 。 合 作 项 目 之 一 是 我 们 协 助 建
设 2008 年 北 京 奥 运 会 主 会 场 国 家 体 育 馆 移 动 式 运 动 草 坪 。
密 西 根 州 立 大 学 为 能 成 为 如 此 重 大 和 令 人 振 奋 的 项 目 的 参
与 者 而 骄 傲 。
密 西 根 州 立 大 学 与 中 国 的 关 系 一 直 延 伸 至 东 兰 辛 的
校 园 。 目 前 在 我 校 的 中 国 研 究 生 和 访 问 学 者 有 700 多 人 。 并
且 , 到 我 校 攻 读 本 科 的 中 国 留 学 生 从 2005 年 仅 9 个 人 猛 增 到
2007 年 的 250 人 。 我 校 很 多 教 师 积 极 参 与 在 中 国 的 合 作 机 构
的 教 学 和 科 研 工 作 , 合 作 领 域 包 括 教 育 , 环 境 保 护 , 食 品 ,
农 业 , 卫 生 健 康 等 。
这 本 简 要 介 绍 并 没 有 能 讲 述 我 们 跟 中 国 交 往 的 所 有 故
事 。 我 们 谨 希 望 这 个 概 况 介 绍 能 够 反 映 出 我 们 为 继 续 深 入
加 强 与 中 国 学 生 、 机 构 和 人 民 的 关 系 的 庄 重 承 诺 。
