SU’s Asian Studies Center (ASN) was founded in
1962 for the purpose of developing and coordinating
Asia-related educational, research, and
outreach programs. In its early years, activities
focused primarily on East Asia, especially China-related
programming. In the years since the Center’s founding, ASN
has created or assisted in the creation of numerous joint
endeavors with partners in China. In addition to programs
involving direct links with China, the Center has worked
continuously to promote the study of Sinitic influence within
and beyond China’s borders. It has supported the creation of
new positions in Chinese studies at MSU, both in traditional
disciplines and advanced language training programs, and
engaged in a variety of outreach activities on China for K-16
teachers and students, members of the professions, and
government leaders.
The Delia Koo Chinese Grant Program, which began in 1999
and ran through 2006, provided undergraduate and graduate
scholarships to students
from specified
universities in the PRC
for study in designated
academic departments
at MSU. This program
provided up to $10,000
to support the first year of study for students who, although
academically qualified for admission to MSU, did not have the
financial means to qualify for a student visa. During the six
years of the program, twenty students in a variety of fields
were able to attend MSU through this program.
The Asian Studies Center currently supports several
research and study initiatives in China. One of its longest-running
programs, an outgrowth of the activities of
Joseph (Jen Hwa) Lee (one of the founders of Chinese studies
at MSU), is the relationship with the Gu Wei Hui (The
Center for the Study of Traditional China) which is affiliated
with Beijing University. This long standing relationship has
two aspects: The first, the annual Joseph Lee endowed lecture
program, brings a scholar of traditional China to MSU
each fall to give a presentation. The second, a program that

began in 2006, supports a Chinese
scholar from the Gu Wei Hui
to do research at MSU. The first
visitor to MSU under this program,
Haizheng Yang, spent six months
at MSU in 2007-08. In return for
this support, the Gu Wei Hui has
assisted MSU scholars doing
research in China. Linda Johnson,
MSU faculty member in Chinese
History, went to China in the spring
of 2007.
The Asian Studies Center also
assisted in developing summer
study abroad programs, including
a program in Tianjin China occurring every other summer
beginning in 2002. This very popular program takes students
on a two month study tour and includes Chinese language
instruction at advanced levels and courses in Chinese culture
and history. More recently, the Center has assisted
with the creation of a semester or year long study abroad
program with Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. This
program offers intensive language training from beginning to
advanced levels, and elective courses in Chinese culture and
history. In the intensive language program, students complete
the equivalent of one and one-half years of traditional
language study in one semester.
In 2006, ASN joined with the Honors College’s Gifted and
Talented Program to sponsor a bi-annual program for Gifted
and Talented High School Students called “China Adventure.”
In this program, eleven 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students
have a week of intensive language and culture study
on the MSU campus
before embarking
on a two week study
tour of Beijing and
Xi’an China.
In addition to
these current programs,
ASN provides
FLAS fellowships for
graduate students
pursuing language
study and research
in China, as well as
a variety of educational
and support
activities for faculty
and students from all
MSU departments
who are seeking to
study or do research
in China.
