Utility, Industry & Corporation Utility Safety Program Constellation Energy announced that its R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, New York has been recognized for its outstanding safety program by achieving STAR status under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). STAR is the highest safety designation given by OSHA and the federal government. Ginna employees celebrated the achievement in a ceremony, along with OSHA officials and local leaders. Development Services Entergy Nuclear is teaming with ENERCON to offer distinct nuclear development services ranging from existing plant relicensing to full service new plant deployment. The new venture will tap the combined expertise of both nuclear renaissance leaders, allowing a full spectrum of customer-focused services that further the companies leadership in the nuclear arena. Industry Request for Information The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has put out a Request for Information (RFI) seeking responses from suppliers with Light Water Reactor (LWR) technology expertise, in Canada and internationally. The RFI closes on June 1, 2009 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The CNSC has initiated this RFI to prepare for the potential license applications for new nuclear power plants that are based on light water reactor technology. The CNSC would need to increase its LWR expertise to prepare for and assess such license applications. Responses to the RFI process will be used for procurement planning of LWR expertise. Once the new nuclear power plants/light water reactor applications are received, a Request for Proposal process will be initiated to retain the required professional services. EPA Recertification Ten years after the start of disposal operations, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) will demonstrate its continued compliance with U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for radioactive waste disposal. DOE submitted its second Compliance Recertification Application (CRA) to EPA, initiating a recertification process required by Congress. Contact: Roger Nelson, telephone: (575) 234-7213. Public Comments The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on regulatory issues and options for potential changes to the agency’s radiation protection regulations, to achieve greater alignment between the regulations and the 2007 recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The NRC believes that the agency’s current regulations continue to provide adequate protection of health and safety of workers, the public and the environment. The ICRP recommendations, contained in ICRP Publication 103, propose measures that go beyond what is needed to provide adequate protection. In a Staff Requirements Memorandum dated April 2, 2009 the Commission directed the staff to engage stakeholders and interested parties on the benefits and burdens of any potential regulatory changes based on the ICRP recommendations. The staff will use public comments over the next two to three years to develop a technical basis for potential rulemaking, for presentation to the Commission. The staff will consult with state regulatory agencies, the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, the Interagency Steering Committee on Radiation Standards, other federal agencies, and other organizations while developing the technical basis. Corporation Merger Patrick Kron, Chairman & CEO of Alstom, reorganized the company by merging into a single entity all the activities related to power generation, currently managed by two Sectors, Power Systems (plants, equipments and retrofit) and Power Service (after-sales, from service to renovation and spare parts).
