Continued from page 40 a scale model test rig to ensure that the appropriate test parameters were used to test a new design concept. • The acoustic side branch acoustic mitigation modification was a creative design that effectively mitigated the high pressure oscillations that developed due to the original standpipe design. • This application represents for the first time a load reducing acoustic side branch design that has been successfully tested with in-plant data to ensure it was a successful application. Transferability: The data collection, benchmarked scale model testing, and application of the acoustic side branch modification are transferable to both BWR and PWR nuclear power plants. The current applications of this groundbreaking work are BWRs that are planning to increase power and operate with new steam flow velocities. Every power uprate application since Quad Cities has used the data and techniques to assess the need for mitigation devices and/or structural reinforcement of critical steam path components. Three plants are considering installation of similar ASB mitigation devices to control high frequency pressure oscillations at power uprate conditions.
