Simeonie Amagoalik and Looty Pijamini
will each mentor a younger apprentice during the creation
process of the monument. Simeonie will mentor
his grandson, Jeffrey Amagoalik, and Looty will mentor
his son, Matthew Pijamini. There are very few carvers
who have the experience and skill to work on a project
of this scale, especially as older carvers slowly lose
the strength and endurance necessary for this type of
work. With this apprenticeship opportunity, these two
young carvers will gain the skills to work on a largescale
project in the future, and preserve the skills of
their Elders.
