again, making the tackle on the game’s opening kickoff, bringing down WR
Sammie Stroughter at the Tampa Bay 23-yard line...Made a good block of
S Sean Jones that helped spring WR Randall Cobb’s 55-yard punt return
in the fourth quarter.
at Detroit Lions (11/24): Saw his first snaps from scrimmage as a pro and
afforded himself well, carrying twice for 10 yards (5.0 avg.) and making a
9-yard reception...Entered the game with the Packers driving for a TD in
the third quarter...Caught a swing pass from QB Aaron Rodgers and followed
blockers down to the Detroit 3-yard line...The offense would cash in
two plays later on a 1-yard TD run by FB John Kuhn.
at New York Giants (12/4): Appeared in his fifth consecutive game, this time
seeing his role increased even more, particularly after RB James Starks left
the game with an ankle injury in the first half and did not return...Carried
four passes for 29 yards (7.3 avg.) during the game...Made a pair of catches
78 Derek Sherrod, T, Rookie, Mississippi State
2011 Season: Club’s top selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, a long, rangy
prospect with good physical tools and an impressive academic resume
who has appeared at times in inaugural season due to injuries at the tackle
positions...Was inactive for the first three contests but saw the field for the
first time in Weeks 4 and 5, playing extensively at Atlanta (Oct. 9) when
veteran T Chad Clifton was lost for the game to a hamstring injury on the
offense’s second possession and T Bryan Bulaga was inactive with a knee
injury...Saw extended action in Week 14 vs. Oakland in a rotation with
Marshall Newhouse at LT...Entered in relief of Bulaga (knee) in Week 15
at Kansas City, but suffered a broken leg in the second half when another
player collapsed on the back of his and was lost for the season...Was
placed on injured reserve, Dec. 20
vs. New Orleans Saints (9/8): Inactive.
at Carolina Panthers (9/18): Inactive.
at Chicago Bears (9/25): Inactive.
vs. Denver Broncos (10/2): Dressed for the first time in his young career due
to the absence of the injured Bryan Bulaga (knee), and entered the game
late in the fourth quarter in place of Clifton (coaches’ decision, rest).
at Atlanta Falcons (10/9): Saw his most extensive action of the season after
Clifton exited on the offense’s second series with a significant hamstring
injury...Was slotted in at RT with second-year man Marshall Newhouse
shifting over to LT...Played the rest of the game at RT in a hostile road
environment, helping the offense to scores on five of the ensuing six possessions
(3 FGs, 2 TDs), posting 25 unanswered points en route to a 25-14
victory...On QB Aaron Rodgers’ 70-yard TD to WR James Jones, blocked
DE Lawrence Sidbury to the inside, allowing Rodgers time to hit Jones
deep in the secondary to put Green Bay ahead 15-14.
vs. St. Louis Rams (10/16) - Dressed for the game as the top backup at both
tackle positions, but did not see any game action.
vs. Minnesota Vikings (11/14): Appeared for the first time since Week 5,
coming on in relief of Bulaga, but seeing the field only for three kneeldowns
in the fourth quarter as the Packers ran out the remaining 1:34 on
the clock in what was a 45-7 victory.
vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11/20) - at New York Giants (12/4): Active, but did
not play.
vs. Oakland Raiders (12/11): Received increased repetitions during the practice
week and saw action as part of a rotation with Marshall Newhouse at
LT...Helped block for an offense that in total put together eight scoring
drives (four TD, four FG) and racked up over 390 yards in a 46-16 victory.
at Kansas City Chiefs (12/18): Came on in relief of the injured Bulaga (knee)
on the opening drive of the second half, taking over at RT...Played throughout
the third quarter, but was injured at the end of a pass play early in the
fourth when he was engaged in blocking DE Tyson Jackson and LB Tamba
Hali landed on the back of his right leg...Suffered a broken leg and was
carted off the field.
37 Sam Shields, CB, 2nd Year, Miami
2011 Season: A young talent with exceptional speed and developing
coverage skills who placed a stranglehold on the defense’s nickel CB
position as a rookie in 2010...Has appeared in 14 games with six starts,
posting 31 tackles (28 solo), and has set new career highs with 13 passes
defensed and three INTs.
vs. New Orleans Saints (9/8): Saw extensive action as the Packers spent
most of the game in their nickel defense against the Saints’ wide-open
passing attack...Started the game and appeared on 72 plays, finishing
with new career highs in both tackles (six, five solo) and passes defensed
(three), also forcing his first career fumble...One of his pass break-ups
came on the first play of the Saints’ two-minute drive at the end of the first
half when he ran step for step in man coverage with New Orleans’ speedster
WR Devery Henderson on a go-route down the sideline...Turned to the
ball and deflected it away, nearly making the interception...Another came in
coverage of a WR Robert Meachem slant early in the fourth quarter as he
closed quickly and got an arm in to bat the ball away...Recorded his first
career forced fumble when he stripped Henderson’s following a 9-yard
gain in the third quarter and ball rolled out of bounds...Made one of the
more unsung plays of the game on special teams, serving as the ‘safety’ on
the kickoff coverage team...Again showed his impressive speed by coming
from the opposite side of the field to track down RB Darren Sproles and
run him out of bounds following a 57-yard return in the third quarter, likely
saving a TD as the last line of defense.
at Carolina Panthers (9/18): Started at RCB in the absence of the injured
Williams (shoulder), recording a solo tackle.
at Chicago Bears (9/25): Resumed his nickel CB role upon Williams’ return
to the starting lineup, but opened the game as the defense came out in
its familiar 5-DB personnel grouping...Registered three solo tackles and
a pass defensed...Broke up a fourth-down pass intended for WR Johnny
Knox in the fourth quarter to force a turnover on downs, keeping the score
27-17 and essentially sealing the win for Green Bay...On the play, quickly
closed on Knox’s in-breaking route and wrapped the WR up as the ball
arrived, jarring it loose and keeping him from making the reception...Also
drew a 15-yard personal foul against WR Devin Hester late in the fourth
quarter after the two sparred following the end of a play...Maintained his
composure and came up big on the following play when he made a nice
open-field tackle of RB Matt Forté on a third-and-long to force a punt.
vs. Denver Broncos (10/2): Had an up-and-down day in coverage against
premier WR Brandon Lloyd, but scored a victory for himself with an INT
early in the fourth quarter...On the play, was in single coverage on Lloyd,
briefly biting on a fake to the outside, but recovering in time to close on
the ball and jump to haul it in inside the Green Bay 5-yard line...Circled
through the end zone and used his speed to bring it out and advance it for
a career-long 60-yard return to the Denver 46-yard line...Possession led
