General Ultrasound Introduction to Abdominal Ultrasound Diagnostic ultrasound is an easy, accurate and cost effective imaging tool available to expedite patient diagnosis and ultimately patient care. The focus of this three day course is to provide participants with the “need to know” information to efficiently and effectively complete a general abdominal ultrasound procedure. The course begins with basic ultrasound techniques involved in completing an abdominal ultrasound examination and general use of the ultrasound device. The course comprises an introduction to normal ultrasound anatomy of the abdominal organs to include the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, spleen, abdominal vessels, and pancreas followed by lecture presentations of common pathologic changes encountered in this diagnostic procedure. Lecture is followed each day by a faculty supervised hands on ultrasound scan lab. The Interactive scan lab with live models and small groups allow each participant ample opportunity to gain the knowledge and skill needed to independently perform a basic abdominal ultrasound procedure. Objectives At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: • Demonstrate a basic understanding of ultrasound physics • Utilize the principles of instrumentation to set up ultrasound equipment for scanning • Recognize and identify the organ systems of the abdomen on the ultrasound image • Differentia between normal and abnormal variants on an ultrasound image • Perform a basic abdominal ultrasound Course Topics • Ultrasound Physics Review and Instrumentation • Normal abdominal anatomy and vasculature • Ultrasound Image Review of Normal vs. Abnormal Cases • Scan Techniques and Protocols for Image Acquisition - Prevertebral Vessels - Liver and Biliary System - Pancreas and Spleen - Kidney and Retro peritoneum Target Audience Physicians who are the entry level of ultrasound scanning and interpretation. Physician groups may include but are not limited to; family practice, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. General Ultrasound Produced and Licensed to: Produced and Licensed to: © 2004 © 2002 Abdominal Ultrasound The Art and Science of abdominal ultrasound require a complete and thorough understanding of the knowledge and clinical skills needed to perform these important clinical procedures. This dynamic training course uses an integrated approach of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on scanning experience with models to accomplish those training goals in a comprehensive five day program. Advanced Health Education Center training model for skills classes follows a systematic approach of presenting a concise review of ultrasound physics and instrumentation followed by a sequential introduction of the abdominal systems with anatomy and vasculature. Case studies and ultrasound images are used to demonstrate the correlation of ultrasound appearance of normal versus abnormal tissues. The afternoon hands on scanning labs reinforce the knowledge acquired in the lecture setting with the necessary clinical skills to acquire and maximize a diagnostic image. By the conclusion of the training course participants have acquired the knowledge and skill required to a complete upper abdomen and small parts protocol. A variety of ultrasound equipment is available in the scan lab. A complete two-week program can be accomplished with this course followed by the five day OB/GYN Ultrasound course.
