Clinical Fellowship Information
Advanced Health Education Center offers clinical fellowship rotations as an enhancement to the preceding theory
course in the selected modality. AHEC offers clinical fellowships to registered radiographers (RT, R) In the modalities
of Mammography, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Fellowships are conducted in
the Houston, TX area in hospitals, imaging facilities and urgent care facilities. The length of clinical fellowship
training will vary by the modality selected. No CE credit is awarded for clinical hours. In order to receive a certificate
documenting clinical attendance, technologists must return their timesheet and copies of their clinical competency
forms to the AHEC office via mail or fax to the attention of the fellowship coordinator.
Modality Information
Mammography Clinical Fellowship: (Option 2- two day clinical fellowship-16 hours)
In April 1999, the final rules of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) became
effective that required entry-level training for mammography including the performance of 25
patient procedures under the supervision of a qualified mammographer. Radiologic Technologists
from small facilities or who enter the training on their own will require a clinical site to acquire
the required 25 patient procedures as per MQSA standards for the FDA. Advanced Health can
provide a limited number of clinical training sites with qualified clinical faculty and student liability
insurance for patient care activities. Students desiring this option should be registered and
paid three weeks in advance of the class. It will require technologists to spend 6 days for the fellowship
and seven days if enrolled in the digital mammography course on the Monday following
the theory portion of the fellowship course.
Mammography Fellowship Coordinator:
Susan Sprinkle-Vincent, AAS, RT(R)(M) - Director/Consultant for Mammography Services
MRI and CT Clinical Fellowship:
40 hours of clinical rotations (Monday-Friday) each week will give the technologist the opportunity
to experience a wide array of exams, be tutored by experienced advanced modality professionals
who provide insights, advice, and help you get the most out of your training. Also, clinical fellowships
may allow technologists the opportunity to accrue some of their clinical experience (competencies)
for preparation for advanced modality examinations.
Clinical rotations are based on a per week registration by the technologist. It is strongly recommended
attendance in clinical rotations be for the full weeks offered. Register early; there is a
limited number of clinical sites available. It will enhance clinical experience if technologists
communicate their goals related to clinical training to the fellowship coordinator. If you have
specific requests regarding equipment preference and/or software, please contact the AHEC clinical
fellowship coordinator related to these modalities.
