Emergency Medicine Ultrasound
Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound
Physicians working in the Emergency Department were the first specialty group to
embrace the use of ultrasound in their specialty area to expedite and improve the quality of
care for the patient. This course was developed for those physicians that have gone beyond
the basics of the FAST exam and want to incorporate advanced ultrasound techniques
into their daily practice. The power and size of the new portable ultrasound equipment has
expanded the application of bedside ultrasound from advanced cardiac evaluation to pulmonary
applications. This class was designed with the busy emergency physician in mind
to minimize time away from practice. You will learn advance cardiac scanning techniques,
skills for DVT’s evaluation, ultrasound guided procedures and vascular access, soft tissue
ultrasound evaluation and new applications. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your
range of procedures in this focused training class taught by a prominent Emergency Physician
from one of the nation’s busiest Emergency Medicine Departments.
Objectives
At the completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
• Identify and display appropriate normal anatomy and
orientation in the ultrasound field of view for selected
topics to include abdominal and chest cavities, the
heart, soft tissue, nerves, the hepatobiliary system, and
peripheral veins.
• Successfully complete emergency medicine ultrasound
examinations following correct patient preparation and
procedure protocols to include simulated line placements
and ultrasound guided needle placements
• Understand variations in scanning protocols for demonstration
of abnormalities and pathologies in emergency
medicine examinations to include abdominal and chest
cavities, the heart, soft tissue, nerves, the heptobiliary
system, and peripheral veins.
• Understand applications of musculoskeletal and soft
tissue ultrasound in the emergency medicine examination
of trauma, acute and chronic disease.
• Identify applications of the Extended Fast Procedure in
the scope of emergency medicine to identify free intraperitoneal
fluid, fluid in the chest, and the sonographic
appearance of pneumothorax.
• Be able to identify sources and research reference materials
for additional information in emergency medicine
ultrasound.
• Explain the importance of self credentialing in emergency
ultrasound, and discuss the importance of record
keeping, peer review and quality assurance in emergency
ultrasound
