Mammography Fellowship<br />

Initial MQSA Training Requirement for Mammography<br />

If you are looking for a comprehensive course on mammography skill training and<br />

enhancement, this is the course for you! You will cover every aspect of a mammography<br />

procedure required to meet initial training requirements as outlined by MQSA . The<br />

topics covered will include anatomy and physiology, hands-on positioning lab, film critique<br />

sessions and clinical participation. Quality control, pathology, special procedures<br />

and imaging the augmented breast are a must for the new mammography technologist<br />

and will be covered in detail as highlights in this class. The instructional material provided<br />

is a great resource once you return to the workplace.<br />

This practical approach to learning mammography is applicable to all technologists<br />

performing mammography. Professional liability insurance is provided for on-site clinical<br />

rotations. Clinical dress codes apply for the clinical rotations. ARRT certification and/or<br />

a fully unrestricted state license are required for admission to the training. Registration<br />

must be received at three weeks in advance for Option 2 to assure clinical rotation sites.<br />

This course has been evaluated and meets the 40 contact hour initial training requirements<br />

as mandated by the MQSA standards for the FDA. You will also receive 32 hours<br />

Category A credit. This course meets the guidelines for states requiring special education<br />

for mammography.<br />

**Participants in this class who will be performing clinical examinations in a digital mammography department or wish to meet initial<br />

requirements in digital mammography must register for the Monday digital mammographers course following the fellowship.<br />

Training Options<br />

In April, 1999, the final rules of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) became effective that required entry<br />

level training for mammography including the performance of 25 patient procedures under the super-vision of a qualified<br />

mammographer. <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, Ltd. will accomplish this through two training options listed below.<br />

Option 1<br />

Facilities may supervise the MQSA required 25 patient procedures for their employees following the didactic program. The<br />

supervising clinical faculty must be a RT(R)(M) meeting MQSA requirements. Supervising clinical faculty must submit proof<br />

of meeting MQSA requirements to <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Health</strong>. Supervising clinical faculty will be required to supervise, document and<br />

return original clinical evaluation forms for students to complete the course. Credentials of clinical faculty must be presented to<br />

<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and approved to implement this option. A form will be faxed to the facility for credential presentation.<br />

Clinical Fellowship requires students to meet hospital and imaging center requirements. You will be advised in advance of<br />

clinical requirements.<br />

Option 2<br />

Radiologic Technologists who enter the training on their own will require a clinical site to acquire the 25 patient procedures.<br />

<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Health</strong> can provide a limited number of clinical training sites with qualified clinical faculty and student<br />

liability insurance for patient care activities. Students desiring this option should be registered and paid two weeks in<br />

advance of the class. It will require you to spend 6 days for the class, as follows:<br />

***For either Option 1 or Option 2 if your department is digital, the Monday course is mandatory so that the student will meet<br />

MQSA requirement for 8 hours of modality specific training before performing digital mammography unless they have previously<br />

obtained 8 hours of initial training in digital mammography. You must register for this class in addition to the fellowship.<br />

Susan Sprinkle-Vincent, AAS, RT(R)(M)<br />

Susan is an internationally known<br />

expert in the field of mammography<br />

with years of experience performing<br />

and teaching mammography. She was<br />

previously an instructor associated<br />

with the continuing education program<br />

cosponsored by the National Cancer Institute and<br />

American College of Radiology. Susan was the Project<br />

Director of Mammography at the University of Texas<br />

M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic. She joined the AHEC<br />

team in 2000 to expand the mammography educational<br />

services and to build a new division to assist AHEC’s clients<br />

with mammography consulting services. Susan is<br />

widely known for her expertise in the clinical aspects of<br />

mammography and her technical skills. She continues<br />

to actively teach technologists, residents, and physicians<br />

the finer details of this highly technical field. Susan’s<br />

desire to share her knowledge with others has led to<br />

another amazing experience at AHEC.<br />
