Mammography Fellowship
Initial MQSA Training Requirement for Mammography
If you are looking for a comprehensive course on mammography skill training and
enhancement, this is the course for you! You will cover every aspect of a mammography
procedure required to meet initial training requirements as outlined by MQSA . The
topics covered will include anatomy and physiology, hands-on positioning lab, film critique
sessions and clinical participation. Quality control, pathology, special procedures
and imaging the augmented breast are a must for the new mammography technologist
and will be covered in detail as highlights in this class. The instructional material provided
is a great resource once you return to the workplace.
This practical approach to learning mammography is applicable to all technologists
performing mammography. Professional liability insurance is provided for on-site clinical
rotations. Clinical dress codes apply for the clinical rotations. ARRT certification and/or
a fully unrestricted state license are required for admission to the training. Registration
must be received at three weeks in advance for Option 2 to assure clinical rotation sites.
This course has been evaluated and meets the 40 contact hour initial training requirements
as mandated by the MQSA standards for the FDA. You will also receive 32 hours
Category A credit. This course meets the guidelines for states requiring special education
for mammography.
**Participants in this class who will be performing clinical examinations in a digital mammography department or wish to meet initial
requirements in digital mammography must register for the Monday digital mammographers course following the fellowship.
Training Options
In April, 1999, the final rules of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) became effective that required entry
level training for mammography including the performance of 25 patient procedures under the super-vision of a qualified
mammographer. Advanced Health Education Center, Ltd. will accomplish this through two training options listed below.
Option 1
Facilities may supervise the MQSA required 25 patient procedures for their employees following the didactic program. The
supervising clinical faculty must be a RT(R)(M) meeting MQSA requirements. Supervising clinical faculty must submit proof
of meeting MQSA requirements to Advanced Health. Supervising clinical faculty will be required to supervise, document and
return original clinical evaluation forms for students to complete the course. Credentials of clinical faculty must be presented to
Advanced Health and approved to implement this option. A form will be faxed to the facility for credential presentation.
Clinical Fellowship requires students to meet hospital and imaging center requirements. You will be advised in advance of
clinical requirements.
Option 2
Radiologic Technologists who enter the training on their own will require a clinical site to acquire the 25 patient procedures.
Advanced Health can provide a limited number of clinical training sites with qualified clinical faculty and student
liability insurance for patient care activities. Students desiring this option should be registered and paid two weeks in
advance of the class. It will require you to spend 6 days for the class, as follows:
***For either Option 1 or Option 2 if your department is digital, the Monday course is mandatory so that the student will meet
MQSA requirement for 8 hours of modality specific training before performing digital mammography unless they have previously
obtained 8 hours of initial training in digital mammography. You must register for this class in addition to the fellowship.
AHEC Success Story
“I just wanted to say thank you again for the
wonderful experience that I received from
you. I have to be honest, coming into this I
wasn’t really sure that this was going to be
for me. I was simply doing it because my coworker
will be retiring and we had no one else
to do mammography. After sitting in that class
and listening to you and all of your helpful &
wonderful knowledge about mammography,
you changed my mind!!! I am absolutely
certain that this is for me!! You have given me
a new outlook on mammography and I now
want to be out there doing this for women and
like you said “saving lives every day”!!
Thank you so much for everything!!”
