During the year Stena also acquired
Herning Produktforretning with branches
in Herning and Holstebro, and which together
with the newly constructed recycling
plant in Frederikshavn creates a
strong foothold in Jutland.
As a whole, Stena Jern & Metal grew
from four branches to eleven during the
year. Through investments in new technology
and acquisitions, production capacity
has been increased. Logistics solutions
are contributing strongly to the
company’s success, as is the market’s
interest in Stena’s overall offering.
ELV
The recycling of end-of-life vehicles is a
pressing issue in Europe. The EU’s ELV
directive scheduled to be introduced by
member states in the years ahead will institute
producer responsibility for used
vehicles. ELV will be both a technical and
logistical challenge for Europe’s recycling
industry. Stena is maintaining a positive
dialogue with the auto industry to find an
effective and environmentally safe solution.
Recovered Paper
During the year Stena Averhoff
strengthened its position as Denmark’s
leading recycler of recovered paper. Total
waste management solutions are
developing positively. One reason is the
establishment of a Group-wide facility
in Brøndby in 2005/2006.

locations. Around 30 paper grades are
supplied to paper mills.
Specialized waste management
expertise
Denmark’s recovered paper market is typical
of the European market in that it faces
much the same conditions. Although prices
and margins remained under pressure during
the year, Stena Averhoff managed to
raise its volume and gain market share
thanks to enhanced services and cost efficiencies.
Through total waste management
solutions, Stena Averhoff offers customers
specialized expertise in recycling paper,
plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap,
electronics and hazardous waste. This is
possible through the cooperation with the
Stena Metall Group’s other recycling companies
in the country.
This focus on total waste management
solutions is one reason for the establishment
of a new Group facility in Brøndby,
outside Copenhagen. In fiscal year
2005/2006 the facility will be placed in
operation, making it possible to further increase
capacity.
Training customers in waste sorting
Stena Averhoff also collects plastics,
which rose substantially in volume during
the year. This business will remain a priority,
and part of its enhanced customer
service is Stena Averhoff’s ability to offer
training in plastics sorting. In this way,
customers can sort their plastic waste
better and increase its value. From an environmental
standpoint, more recycled
plastics are becoming new raw material
rather than being incinerated.
Efficient waste management by customers
is important, and Stena Averhoff offers
a broad range of collection equipment for
waste removal and compaction. When
customers build new facilities or renovate,
the company is often called in as early as
the architectural design stage, helping to
incorporate efficient waste management
into the property.
Sought-after raw material
A third of Stena Averhoff’s volume is sold
in the Danish market, while two thirds is
exported to paper mills in other European
countries. Exports are handled by the subsidiary
Scanpaper. Recovered paper is a
sought-after raw material in the EU and
globally. For economic and environmental
reasons, demand is expected to rise in the
years ahead.
