Childhood, Youth and
Community Studies BA (Hons)
Childhood, Youth and Community Studies
at Winchester encourages students to
develop a critical awareness of research,
policy and practice in relation to children,
young people and their families. Features
of interest include child development,
public health, the educational system,
youth and community work, and
criminology and community safety. The
programme is ideal for those interested
in deepening their knowledge and
understanding about children and young
people, and those who have career
aspirations to work with children and
young people but have not as yet decided
upon a specific career pathway.
Programme content
The programme has children and young
people at its centre and focuses on the
health, sociology, psychology, criminology
and social care. Students develop a holistic
understanding of the knowledge and skills
needed for multidisciplinary and team
working in a range of communities and
work settings.
In Year 1, studies include child
development, contrasting formal and
informal learning, inequalities, health
promotion and community development.
In Years 2 and 3, this flexible degree
enables students to concentrate on a
particular age group or specialism such
as education, health or society and the
effects these may have on children’s
development.
There is an opportunity to take a
volunteering module in Year 2, which
