Tunnels and Underground Structures
HMM is a world leader in tunnel and underground engineering. Our “underground roots” trace back to our founders’
involvement in London’s Underground road and rail systems in 1902, and Toronto’s subway system in 1954. Our
association with these clients continues today – reflective of the quality of our work and enduring client relationships.
Covering all market sectors, we are skilled in tunneling technologies that include bored, cut-and-cover, jacked,
segmentally-lined, and immersed tube tunnels, as well as sequential excavation methods and trenchless methods
such as microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling.
We understand the challenges of overcoming complex,
variable ground conditions, and lead the industry in
developing contracting approaches to manage the
associated risks. Our services span from planning and
program management to detailed design and construction
management – with the expertise to successfully deliver
complex projects with a minimum of client risk.

Transportation Tunnels
HMM, together with its global affiliates, has engineered
some of the world’s most prominent rail and transit
projects, including subway, transit, people mover, and
freight rail systems across North America. Projects
include metro systems in Los Angeles, Toronto, New
York, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Jose,
Washington, DC, Vancouver and Montreal, as well as
such signature projects as the London Underground
and the Channel Tunnel. Highway tunnel projects
include the world’s largest bored highway tunnel in
Seattle, Alaska’s Whittier Access Tunnel, the bus
tunnels under Heathrow Airport, the A3 Hindhead
Tunnels, and the innovative, dual-purpose Stormwater
Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) in Kuala
Lumpur.
Wastewater, Water, Hydropower and Energy
Tunnels
By leveraging key lessons learned from our broadbased
tunneling experience, we “get it right the first
time.” Our expertise in geotechnical, civil, structural,
electrical, mechanical, systems, and ventilation
disciplines allows HMM to offer clients a one-stop
solution for these complex projects.
In the wastewater, water, hydropower, and energy
sectors, we have engineered more than 650 miles
(1,000 km) of tunnels worldwide. Whether through
sensitive urban settings or mountainous terrain, we
combine our ground engineering, shaft, and tunneling
technology, as well as lining design expertise to
overcome the most challenging conditions.
By augmenting our underground expertise with skills in
wastewater engineering, pipeline and corrosion
engineering, pump station and treatment plant design,
hydraulic modeling, and hydropower development,
