Project Description
In order to provide New Jersey-American
Water’s (NJAW) Barrier Island system with
a reliable supply of water and to meet
future demands, a new pipeline was
constructed interconnecting NJAW’s
Barrier Island system with the Monmouth
County system.
The project involved the construction of a
transmission main consisting of
approximately 42,500 linear feet of 20-inch
and 24-inch diameter ductile iron pipe and a
prefabricated underground metered
interconnection. Also included in the
project were two surface water crossings by
means of horizontal directional drilling
(HDD).
The surface water crossings consist of
approximately 1,400 linear feet of 24-inch high density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) at the Manasquan
Inlet between the Borough of Manasquan, Monmouth County and the Borough Point Pleasant
Beach, Ocean County and approximately 910 linear feet of 24-inch HDPE at Wreck Pond between
the Borough of Spring Lake and the Borough of Sea Girt, Monmouth County. The depths of the
drill pipe below the Manasquan Inlet and Wreck Pond crossings were approximately 55 feet and 30
feet, respectively.
The prefabricated underground metered interconnection contains meters, flow control valves, and
SCADA equipment. A rechlorination system was constructed in the existing facility to maintain the
chlorine residual coming out of the pipeline.
HMM Role
Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) was responsible for all aspects of the transmission main design,
prepared plans and specifications, cost estimates, permit application, and construction
administration. Besides the transmission main and the metered interconnection, HMM also designed
five emergency interconnections with other water purveyors along the pipeline route.
