Food Meant to be Shared Shawna Hogan Small olives in the grain, grape tomato, thyme, a dim kitchen light to witness the feeding of oneself. Buckley crooning from the next room about eternal life, longing, the lover that should have come over. Yours can’t either, so you arrange the wooden cutting boards in solitude, humming to him anyway. You forget what cheese the cook said to use that night at the restaurant, where your sister cupped a skeletal hold on nothing but glasses of hot tea, and you told her the story of the hospice nurse who stopped you right outside the door to your mother’s bedroom and said it would be pointless—pointless, she said— to feed her now, while the steam from the broth made an upward escape and the salted crackers patiently sat on a napkin, waiting for a mouth. Oil hisses in its warming, the asparagus you found buried under more practical produce is thinning in the pan. Your sister confessed after your tale that she kept reading the cards that came with all the bagel and fruit baskets sent by neighbors; they spelled Thinking of you in your time of sorrow and the like, but what she saw was Please, keep eating. (And she didn’t—this you did not say) 4
But as this night’s food is revealed as meal and you lay it down on a table with more chairs than needed, you want to pass a plate to all of them; you know the absent are hungry, too. You want to feed them and urge please, let us keep eating. 5
