ASSESSING THE VALUES AND MANAGEMENT OF THE NSW TRAVELLING STOCK RESERVE 3.3 Catchment & Natural Resource Protection Values The results show that the most common catchment related value on TSRS is riparian lands. It is logical that as stock require water many TSRs would be located to provide access to rivers, streams and creeks. Grazing of riparian lands can lead to degradation, such as increased erosion, alteration of vegetation communities through preferential grazing and facilitate exotic weed invasion. Cattle in particular favour grazing on riparian lands and this can result in increased stream turbidity and an increase of nutrients and bacteria into the stream. (Lovett & Price 2007). Grazing of stock on streams is not best practice environmental management and is inconsistent with State Government legislation and CAP targets. The other main catchment related issue identified is grazing on steep land and/or land with high mass movement potential. Maintaining groundcover is the most effective way to minimise run-off and erosion (DPI 2005) In Summary: • 39% contained riparian lands, i.e. creeks, streams and rivers • 30% were considered to have moderate to high mass movement potential • 23% were mapped as protected land under the Soil Conservation Act • 17% had high or outstanding scenic and/or aesthetic values • 16% were consider to have high to extreme erosion hazard • 13% had high to very high vegetation values for catchment protection • 11% had high to very high flood potential (> 1:20 probability) • 8% were adjoining a high conservation area, e.g. National Park • 4% were located in a known high groundwater recharge area with salinity problems • 3% contained outstanding geologic/geomorphic features • 2% contained wetlands • 1% contained or were likely to contain karst areas • 1% had the presence or a high probability of acid sulphate soils • >1% contained coastal features Figure 10 – Catchment values by mapping unit. Cedar Brush TSR Cedar Brush TSR is a narrow reserve located on the eastern fall of the Great Dividing Range and extends in elevation from 530m to 840m over approximately 1km. It is bounded by Cedar Brush Nature Reserve to the west and a perpetual Crown lease to the east. Towarri National Park adjoins the north eastern corner of the TSR. The reserve forms an important link for walking stock between the Liverpool Plains and the Hunter Valley. The reserve is 14 ha in size and well vegetated with woodland and wet sclerophyll vegetation formations. It is steep to very steep and action has been taken to rehabilitate eroded sections of the parcel. The site is not fenced on the western boundary. Access to the reserve is 4WD only and there is no vehicular access through the parcel. This reserve is rated NC1 and EP1. The recommendations for the site were for it to be retained by the LPMA (Lands) and reserved for Travelling Stock and Environmental Protection.
