CUTTING TOOLS
Advantages chipless tapping:
• Consistent accuracy of the thread produced. Prevents too
large or too small cutting. All threads are absolutely within the
tolerances over their whole length.
• Higher loading capacity of the thread produced, especially in
thin sheet metals and materials with low tensile strength,
because the material’s grain flow is not cut through.
• Only one fluteless tap is required for through and blind hole
thread.
• Cost cutting due to long tool life of the fluteless tap (no blunting)
and due to shorter cycle time when using higher speed
(whereby the materials generally flow better).
Requirements for the use of fluteless taps:
• Materials with good workability.
This includes almost all non-ferrous metals and aluminium
alloys, including those which are short-chipping with 1 to 3 %
elongation at break only.
AlSi alloys up to max. 12% Si. Very many grades of steel can be
formed, even quenched and tempered steels with 900 N/mm 2 .
However, the application limits can only be determined by way
of practical trials.
• Lubrication
Good anti-friction properties are particularly important for the
thread format. Lubricative, graphite containing cooling lubricant
or oils should be used for fluteless taps/formers, or a suitable
additive added to the existing lubricant. TiN-coated fluteless taps
produce very good results in various materials with emulsion too.
• Larger drilled hole diameter than the tap drill size of a thread
made using cutting methods. The root of the thread formed
may not be fully formed. However, the degree of thread
engagement is 70 to 75 %.
