Stratified survey - A survey that chooses<br />
participants randomly after they have<br />
been divided into the applicable strata or<br />
sub-groups.<br />
Student’s t-test - A statistical test to<br />
determine if there is a significant<br />
difference in means of a continuous<br />
variable between two groups.<br />
Stunting - A slowing of skeletal growth<br />
that results in reduced stature or length; a<br />
condition that usually results from<br />
extended periods of inadequate food<br />
intake, especially during the years of<br />
greatest growth for children.<br />
Subcutaneous fat - Fat located just<br />
underneath the skin; fat that is used as a<br />
measure of total body fat stores in skinfold<br />
thickness measurements.<br />
Subscapular area - The site just below<br />
the shoulder blade; situated below or on<br />

Summary statistics - Statistics that are<br />

Systematic sample - A modification of a<br />
simple random sample, that consists of<br />

Tolerated sampling error - The amount<br />
of difference permissible between the<br />
estimate (results from a survey sample)<br />
and the actual value in the population.<br />
Trend assessment - The process of<br />
tracking nutritional progress over time;<br />
examples of nutritional trend assessment<br />
include growth monitoring and<br />
nutritional surveillance.<br />
Trend studies - A type of longitudinal<br />
survey that uses different individuals for<br />
study over time; a study which uses<br />
different households in each survey, but<br />
in which each sample represents the<br />
same general population at different<br />
times.<br />
Triceps - The muscle at the back of the<br />
upper arm; a large three-headed muscle<br />
running along the back of the upper arm<br />
and functioning to extend the forearm.<br />
