traditionally equated with treason<br />
Fatima al-Mutairi of Saudi Arabia, who was martyred at <strong>the</strong> age<br />
of 26, expressed on a website her desire to be accepted as a real Saudi<br />
but also a follower of Christ:<br />
Truly, we love our homeland, and we are not traitors<br />
We take pride that we are Saudi citizens<br />
How could we betray our homeland, our dear people<br />
How could we, when for death—for Saudi Arabia—we stand ready<br />
The homeland of my grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>ir glories, and odes—for it I am<br />
writing<br />
And we say, "We are proud, proud, proud to be Saudis"<br />
...<br />
We chose our way, <strong>the</strong> way of <strong>the</strong> rightly guided<br />
And every man is free to choose any religion<br />
Be content to leave us to ourselves to be believers in Jesus<br />
Her plea was in vain and in August 2008, her fa<strong>the</strong>r and bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />
discovered her Christian allegiance and killed her. In response to<br />
news of her martyrdom a Saudi woman wrote ‘thousand, thousand<br />
congratulations for her death. . .and a special thanks to her bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />
who carried out God's law. . .curse upon <strong>the</strong> apostate Fatima, curse<br />
upon <strong>the</strong> apostate Fatima.’ 76<br />
Even in <strong>the</strong> secular West, apostasy from Islam is most always interpreted<br />
as a betrayal of collective identity. ‘Don't you realize,’ a<br />
British-born Pakistani friend of mine was told by her relative, ‘that<br />
by becoming a Christian you have abandoned your roots, your heritage<br />
and your family name’<br />
So to overcome <strong>the</strong>se deep-seated assumptions about collective<br />
identity remains a major challenge for converts. It is made somewhat<br />
easier in globalizing societies, or in cultures which retain even a<br />
