Robot Sculpture We will use recycled materials: found objects and everyday house hold items to create fantastic robots. Bring your junk in for eyes, feet, arms, and buttons. A great way to learn about recycling, design, construction, and problem solving. Students will explore a wide range of recycled and other materials including paint, office supplies, wooden shapes, science equipment, glue, cardboard and computer accessories to build models of robots and machines. We’ll make tempera starting with real eggs, clay with flour and salt and much more. Kids will learn self-reliance, as well as painting and sculpting skills. Please note: Course location subject to change. Instructor: Rebecca Bui Ceramics: Raku Intensive Discover the magic of Raku, an ancient Japanese firing process. This is a low fire process where ceramic objects are fast fired, removed hot from the kiln and placed in a container with combustible materials. In this reduction atmosphere, pots attain lustrous multi-colored glaze effects. We’ll make several items using hand-built and extruder techniques, as well as the potter’s wheels, and Raku glaze our artwork twice during the week. Movie Production at the Media Center (Full Day Workshop) Learn about movie production, focusing on production roles, lighting and composition! Go on location and use the Media Center’s professional video equipment to make your movie a reality! Behind the Scenes at the Museum (Full Day Workshop) Gain firsthand experience in curating and designing an exhibition for the Palo Alto Art Center! Working closely with the Palo Alto Art Center’s staff, including the curator, installation crew, and the Art Center’s director, this class will follow the steps in curating a show from start to finish. Be a part of a blind jury process and select artworks for the exhibition, write label copy, hang the artwork in the Art Center’s meeting room, and promote the exhibition. This is a great workshop for anyone interested in art and/or working in museums. We’ll focus on simple, effective techniques kids can learn to improve painting fluency and then paint from life in our little studio. Make your own feathered wings, a butterfly to fly outside, a colorful humming bird mobile, and paint watercolors of dragons and Pterosaurs. Make a sculpture of a bat out of clay.
