Exploring Palo Alto through
Digital Photography, Section 2
(All Day Workshop)
Join us for a full day art camp hosted by the Recreation
Department and the Palo Alto Art Center. Spend the week
taking pictures of places and people in the city of Palo
Alto. Learn about the fundamentals of digital photography,
including composition, lighting, perspective, contrast, color,
portraiture and motion, while you are out shooting in the
field. Each morning, kids will take photographs at various
sites around Palo Alto. In the afternoons, camp will be
held in the computer lab at The Drop at Cubberley Community
Center, where kids will use Photoshop to enhance,
manipulate and finish digital images. At the end of the
week, choose your favorite pictures and create a portfolio

AFTERNOON
Plaster Casting
Learn the intriguing process of plaster casting! Students
will create two-part plaster molds from everyday objects
and hand-crafted objects made out of clay. Once the mold
is complete, students will make multiple positive casts of
the objects. Students will also combine their objects to
make more complex sculptures and artistic installations.
On the last day of class we will have a group show to share
and showcase our artistic accomplishments. Students will
come away with a deep appreciation of traditional sculptural
techniques and contemporary practices. Instructor:

Tinkering: Moving Art
Contraptions, kinetic art, do-hickeys and thing-a-ma-bobs.
This fun class will teach students basic mechanical
principles, safe use of tools, and above all inventiveness. A
safe and fun way for your girl or boy to learn basic skills and
develop confidence. Instructor is an accomplished kinetic

MORNING
Artist’s Books and Papermaking
Make your own paper with local plants, flowers and various
recycled materials, and bind the pages using a simple pamphlet
stich, which we then can paint, draw, or collage. Kids
will be amazed to learn that they can make beautiful artist’s

Fun with Drawing & Mixed
Media!
Explore exciting techniques to stretch your imagination and
strengthen your skills. Draw with gusto using wax resist
and ink, an upside down technique, chalks, colored pencils,
drawing pencils and magic tape! Incorporate your drawings
with other media such as printmaking and sculpture.

Advanced Digital Photography
(All Day Workshop)
Join us for a full day art camp hosted by the Recreation
Department and the Palo Alto Art Center. Continue to
develop your shooting skills and learn more advanced
studio techniques, including lighting. Each morning, kids
will take photographs at various sites around Palo Alto. In
the afternoons, camp will be held in the computer lab at the
Teen Center at Cubberley Community Center, where kids
will use Photoshop to enhance, manipulate, and finish digital
images. Prerequisite: This class is intended for students
who have previous experience with digital photography. The
class is open to all students who completed Exploring Palo
Alto through Digital Photography in summer 2012. Other
interested students should submit a small photography portfolio
(5 images) or letter of recommendation to artcenter@
cityofpaloalto.org. Instructors: Justin Winokur (photography)
and Recreation Staff.
