3.5 The rainfall in the south Peninsula at the end of the southwest monsoon<br />

season or the beginning of the northeast monsoon season is mainly in the<br />

interior of the Peninsula; it is also generally in the afternoon, evening or<br />

early part of night. Subsequently, as the season advances, the rainfall is<br />

mainly in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and in south Kerala, the interior<br />

districts getting only a little rain.<br />

3.6 In contrast to the southwest monsoon rainfall along the west coast,<br />

where rainfall increases progressively from the coast towards inland upto the<br />

Western Ghats, in the case of northeast monsoon rainfall, even when it is not<br />

associated with a depression or a storm, the heaviest rainfall is along the<br />

coast and the rainfall decreases as we go towards the interior. Such a distribution<br />

in the mean rainfall pattern has already been referred tn Sec. 3.2(ii).<br />

3.7 In general, rainfall is more variable in the coastal districts than in<br />

the interior districts where rainfall is less. In Tamil Nadu, the cc—efficients<br />

of variability are highest in the north coastal districts where the rainfall is<br />

also highest. This feature is in contrast to the general principle that variability<br />

in rainfall is more over areas where the seasonal total is small than<br />

vice versa.<br />

3.8 The distribution of the northeast monsoon rainfall in the south Peninsula<br />

during the 77 year period (1875—1951) is given below*—
