Fellows <strong>of</strong> the Royal Society who are or were Freemasons, listed alphabetically<br />

Tristram, The Revd Canon Henry Baker, MA (Oxon), Hon LLD (Edin) [1868], FRS [4 Jun 1868], Hon DD<br />

(Dunelm) [27 Jun 1882] 521 (11 May 1822–8 Mar 1906), clergyman, Biblical scholar, traveller, ornithologist, geologist<br />

and naturalist.<br />

Born at Eglingham Vicarage, near Alnwick, Northumberland, eldest son <strong>of</strong> The Revd Henry Baker Tristram, his<br />

younger brother, Thomas Hutchinson Tristram (1825–1912), an ecclesiastical lawyer became Chan <strong>of</strong> London and<br />

many other Diocses.<br />

Educ at Durham School, matric 1839, as a Scholar, Lincoln Coll, Oxford (BA 1844, 2 nd Cl in Classics, MA 1846).<br />

Ordained deacon 1845 and priest 1846, Curate at Morchard Bishop 1845–46, but suffered from tuberculosis and was<br />

forced to live abroad for his health. Sec to Govr, Bermuda, and Naval and Military Chap, 1847–49, where he took up<br />

study <strong>of</strong> birds and shells. Rector, Castle Eden, Co Durham 1849–60. Married 1850 Eleanor Mary Bowlby and they<br />

had 1 son and 7 daus, including a missionary and teacher, Katherine Alice Salvin Tristram (1859–1948). 522<br />

In Algeria for winters 1855–56 and 1856–57 for sake <strong>of</strong> his health and explored deep into Sahara desert; in 1858,<br />

visited Palestine, returning there in 1863–64 and 1872, dividing his time between natural history observations and<br />

identifying Scripture localities.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Greatham Hospital and Vicar <strong>of</strong> Greatham, Co Durham, 1860–73; Hon Canon, 1870, Durham<br />

Cathedral, and then Residentiary Canon, installed in 10th Stall, 20 Dec 1873. Travelled again to Palestine 1881,<br />

Lebanon, Mesopotamia and Armenia. Tristram was Founder and original Member, Br Ornithologists’ Union. His<br />

travels and contacts enabled him to accumulate an extensive collection <strong>of</strong> bird skins, sold to World Museum,<br />

Liverpool.<br />

Tristram’s publications included The Great Sahara (1860), The Land <strong>of</strong> Israel, a Journal <strong>of</strong> Travels with<br />

Reference to Its Physical History (1865), The Land <strong>of</strong> Israel (1865), at request <strong>of</strong> SPCK, The Natural History <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Bible (1867), The Daus <strong>of</strong> Syria (1872), Land <strong>of</strong> Moab (1874), Pathways <strong>of</strong> Palestine (1882), The Fauna and Flora <strong>of</strong><br />

Palestine (1884), Eastern Customs in Bible Lands (1894) and Rambles in Japan (1895).<br />

In 1879 Tristram declined <strong>of</strong>fer from Prime Minister (Benjamin Disraeli, Earl <strong>of</strong> Beaconsfield, KG) to become the<br />

Anglican Bp in Jerusalem, although he visited Palestine again 1880–81, 1894 and 1897. Travelled, 1891, in Japan,<br />

where he visited his dau, Katherine Tristram, in Osaka, and to China and American north-west. His chief interest lay<br />

in work for Church Missionary Socy and he acted as its Rep in Co Durham for forty years.<br />

A no. <strong>of</strong> birds were named after him, including Tristram’s Starling, Tristram’s Woodpecker, Tristram’s Serin and<br />

Tristram’s Storm-petrel. In desert near Masada, the Tristramit can be found. Such was his devotion to collection <strong>of</strong><br />

bird skins (which in those days involved shooting them), that he was known as ‘The Great Gun <strong>of</strong> Durham’. 523<br />

His wife died 1903 and he died at his house in The Coll, Durham, adjacent to the Cathedral.<br />

His Banner, complete with his armorial bearings, is displayed in a glass case at foot <strong>of</strong> stairs in MH, Old Elvet,<br />

Durham.<br />

Tristram L. and RA Chapter No. 2415, Shildon, Co Durham, warranted 26 Sep and consecrated 27 Nov 1891 and<br />

chartered 3 Aug and consecrated 16 Nov 1927, respectively, were named after him, as was Tristram L. <strong>of</strong> MMM No.<br />

346, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, warranted 2 Dec 1884, consecrated 9 Jan 1885.<br />

Tufnell, 525 Capt Samuel, FRS [4 May 1709] (5 Sep 1682–21 Dec 1758), chief master mason at Westminster Abbey;<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the two mason contractors, with Andrew Jelfe, for the construction <strong>of</strong> Westminster Bridge, London, 1738–50,<br />
