1796–24 Oct 1806. Created: by George III, 12 Nov 1806, Baron Ailsa, giving him seat in HL; and by his longstanding<br />

friend, William IV, 10 Sep 1831, Marquess <strong>of</strong> Ailsa (both UK).<br />

Married, 1 Jun 1793, Margaret Erskine (c.1772–1848), 2 nd dau <strong>of</strong> John Erskine <strong>of</strong> Dun (†1812) and his wife, Mary<br />

Baird. Their 2nd son, John Kennedy Erskine (1802–1831), 305 married, 5 Jul 1827, Augusta FitzClarence, later [23<br />

May 1831] Lady Augusta Erskine (1803–1865), 306 4 th natural dau <strong>of</strong> HRH Prince William Henry, Duke <strong>of</strong> Clarence<br />

and St Andrews, KG, later [1830] William IV, PGM, PGL, by the actress Dora or Dorothy Jordan, known as Mrs<br />

Bland.<br />

Died aged 76 at his home at St Margaret’s, Isleworth, Middlesex and was bur at Dun, Forfarshire, being<br />

succeeded, as his 2 sons had predeceased him, by his grandson, Archibald Kennedy (1816–1870), as 2 nd Marquess <strong>of</strong><br />

Ailsa, later [7 Mar 1859] KT.<br />

Scottish Freemason.<br />

Kinski, Philip Joseph, Count Kinski, FRS [18 Nov 1731] (1700–1749), <strong>of</strong> Chinitz and Tettau, Austrian Emperor’s<br />

Ambassador to Great Britain. Had houses in Hanover Square and his country seat at Isleworth, near Hampton Ct.<br />

Elected FRS the same day as HSH Francis, Duke <strong>of</strong> Lorraine [qv, above].<br />

Initiated, early Nov 1731, at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, the seat <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Walpole, by GM, PGL, Thomas,<br />

Coke, 1 st and last Baron Lovel <strong>of</strong> Minster Lovel, KB [qv above], probably at same meeting that Thomas Pelham-<br />

Holles, Duke <strong>of</strong> Newcastle, was raised.<br />

Knight, Gowin FRS [25 Apr 1745] (1713-1772). Physician and inventor <strong>of</strong> geomagnetic instruments<br />

Born in Lincolnshire and educated at Leeds grammar school. Studied natural philosophy and medicine at Oxford<br />

until 1741. Thereafter lived in London. Developed artificial magnets by stroking steel bars with other magnets and<br />

made compasses more precise. Awarded the Copley medal in 1747. Developed commercial applications for his<br />

inventions and his compasses were <strong>of</strong>ficial issue for all Royal Navy ships for many years although they were<br />

criticized for their performance in stormy weather. Active in the RS. Became principal librarian at the British<br />

Museum in 1756 and lived there until his death.<br />

His membership <strong>of</strong> Lodge No 181(later No 114) (PGL) meeting at the White Lion at Banbury (formed 1740) is<br />

recorded in a copy <strong>of</strong> the 1738 Book <strong>of</strong> Constitutions held at the Library and Museum <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry. The lodge was<br />

erased in 1768.<br />

305 Some 8 months before his death <strong>of</strong> tuberculosis, 6 Mar 1831 at Pisa, William IV had appointed him one <strong>of</strong> his Equerries.<br />

306 She married, 2ndly, 24 Aug 1836, The Hon, later [1836] Lord, John Frederick Gordon, later Hallyburton, MP (1799–1878) [3 rd son <strong>of</strong><br />

George (Gordon), 5th Earl <strong>of</strong> Aboyne, later [1836] 9 th Marquess <strong>of</strong> Huntly, KT (1761–1853), 44th GMM, Scot, 1802–04], afterwards a V-Adml,<br />

GCH, who was the last-named (<strong>of</strong> thirty, headed by HRH The Duke <strong>of</strong> Sussex, KG, Grand Master and Master) on the Roll <strong>of</strong> Members <strong>of</strong> Royal<br />

Alpha L. No. 16 in 1818; rejoining member, 22 May 1841.<br />
