Fellows <strong>of</strong> the Royal Society who are or were Freemasons, listed alphabetically<br />

Born in Cornwall to a Canadian father, he won a scholarship to the Royal School <strong>of</strong> Mines and won prizes in<br />

geology. Appointed assistant Superintendent <strong>of</strong> the geological survey <strong>of</strong> India in 1890 (director from 1903). During<br />

his tenure the focus <strong>of</strong> the survey changed from imperial interests to developing India’s mineral wealth. Founded the<br />

Mining and Geological Institute <strong>of</strong> India in 1906. Worked in India during 1914-18 war as president <strong>of</strong> the Indian<br />

munitions board. In 1922 became rector <strong>of</strong> the Imperial College <strong>of</strong> Science and Technology. 1929-44 principal and<br />

vice chancellor <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh.<br />

The first initiate in Imperial College Lodge No 4536 on 1 Dec 1923, passed 10 May 1924, raised 14 Jun 1924.<br />

Resigned 30 Jun 1934<br />

Hollings, John, MD, FRCP, FRS [9 Mar 1727] 276 (c.1683–10 May 1739), a ‘remarkable polymath and his classical<br />

scholarship and general culture was highly rated by his contemporaries, one <strong>of</strong> whom referred to him as “the most<br />

ingenious Dr John Hollings” 277 ’; Physician-General to the Army and Physician-in-Ordinary to the King.<br />

Hope, V-Adml William Johnstone, FRS [24 Mar 1808], MP [1800–30], later [4 Oct 1825] Sir William Johnstone,<br />

GCB (16 Aug 1766–2 May 1831), naval <strong>of</strong>ficer and politician, 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> John Hope (1739–1785) <strong>of</strong> Craigiehall,<br />

Linlithgow, a London merchant and his wife, Mary Breton (1742–1767). His first cousin was Admiral Sir Henry<br />

Hope (1787–1863).<br />

Born at Finchley, Middlesex, and educ Edinburgh High School, 1774–76. In Jan 1777, entered the Navy under his<br />

uncle, Capt Charles Hope (†1808), in the Weasel, serving with him in different ships on the home, Lisbon and<br />

Newfoundland stations until, Oct 1782, promoted Lieut, Daedalus, serving on Newfoundland and home stations and<br />

being promoted Cdr, 1790, and acting Capt, Adamant, and serving in Mar 1786 in the frigate Pegasus with HRH<br />

Prince William Henry to Newfoundland and the West Indies, and in May 1787 in the Boreas, with Horatio Nelson,<br />

later Viscount Nelson <strong>of</strong> the Nile, as captain. For the next few years, under various commanders, he served in several<br />

ships in varied stations. In Mar 1795, he became Flag Capt to Adml Duncan. Resigned his command in 1801, having<br />

been elected MP: Dumfries Burghs, the previous year; Dumfriesshire, Oct 1804 until 1830, but was rarely active in<br />

the House. One <strong>of</strong> the Lds <strong>of</strong> the Admlty, 1807–09, attained flag rank, Aug 1812, C-in-C, Leith, 1813–18, V-Adml,<br />

1819, Senior Naval Ld at the Admlty, 1820–28, later a member <strong>of</strong> council <strong>of</strong> the Ld High Adml. Treas, Royal Naval<br />

Hospital, Greenwich, 1828, until that <strong>of</strong>fice abolished, then one <strong>of</strong> 5 commrs for managing the hospital. Granted<br />

Freedom, City <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, 13 Mar 1814, with 5 others, including George Boyle, later Ross-Lindsay-Crawfurd-<br />

Boyle, GCH, 4 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Glasgow, 278 Ld-Lt, Renfrewshire.<br />

On 12 April 1831, he was invited by King William IV to dine at St James’s Palace with some <strong>of</strong> the other GCBs,<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom there were then ninety-one, including four princes <strong>of</strong> the blood royal 279 and nine honorary knights – he had<br />

been appointed a Grand Cross on 4 October 1825 – but sadly he was one <strong>of</strong> four knights who were ‘severely<br />

indisposed’ and unable to be present, but there were some sixty-six knights and <strong>of</strong>ficers present. 280<br />

Married twice: (1), 8 Jul 1792, his cousin Lady Anne Hope, later Hope Johnstone (1768–28 Aug 1818), de jure<br />

Countess <strong>of</strong> Annandale and Hartfell in her own right, eldest dau <strong>of</strong> James Hope, later Hope-Johnstone, 3 rd Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Hopetoun (1741–1817), and they had 4 sons, <strong>of</strong> whom the eldest became the de jure 7 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Annandale and<br />

Hartfell, the 2 nd was Adml Sir William James Hope-Johnstone, KCB, RN (1798–1878), and the younger two also<br />

became RN <strong>of</strong>ficers, and 2 daus; (2), 30 Oct 1821, Maria, Dowager Countess <strong>of</strong> Athlone (1770–1851), widow <strong>of</strong><br />

Frederik Willem [Frederick William] van Reede, 6 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Athlone (1766–1810), and 2 nd dau <strong>of</strong> Sir John Eden, 4 th<br />

Bt, MP (1740–1812), but they had no children.<br />

Died at Bath, and bur at Johnstone Church, Johnstone, Dumfriesshire.<br />

Initiated, ostensibly aged 24 but actually only 19 years, 7 months and 25 days, 11 Apr 1786, a Lt, in Prince<br />

George L. No. 86, Foxhole Quay, Plymouth, 281 becoming a MM, 18 Sep 1786, in St John’s L. No. 186, St John’s,<br />

Newfoundland (his membership registered in GL, Scot, records, 1820), joining at an unknown date St Luke’s L. No.<br />

48 (now The L. <strong>of</strong> Holyrood House (St Luke’s) No. 44), Canongate, Edinburgh. Actively involved in several other<br />

Orders <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry. 282<br />
