Fellows <strong>of</strong> the Royal Society who are or were Freemasons, listed alphabetically<br />

more successful than others, retiring to Jersey 1858, where he died at St Mark’s Crescent, St Helier, being bur at St<br />

Helier.<br />

Murray, John, 4 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Atholl, FRS [9 Nov 1780], later PC [25 Jun 1797], then KT [23 Apr 1800] (1755–1830),<br />

eldest son and heir <strong>of</strong> John Murray, 3 rd Duke <strong>of</strong> Atholl, KT (1729–1774), GM, AGL, 1771–74 and 29 th GMM, Scot,<br />

1773–74.<br />

His 2 nd son, Lt-Gen Lord James Murray, FRS [9 Apr 1818], later [1820] KCH, then [9 Jul 1821] 1 st Lord Glenlyon<br />

(1782–1837), was father <strong>of</strong> George Augustus Frederick John Murray, 6 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Atholl, later [28 Oct 1853] KT<br />

(1814–1864), who was initiated, Nov 1841, Dunkeld L. No. 14 (SC); DepGM 1841–43; 67 th GMM, Scot, 1843–64.<br />

Initiated, passed, raised and installed WM, 25 Feb 1775, Grand Master’s L. No. 1, London.<br />

GM, AGL, installed 25 Jun 1775, in presence <strong>of</strong> William, 2 nd Duke <strong>of</strong> Leinster (1749–1804), later KP, GM, Ire,<br />

1770–72 and 1777–78, and Lt-Gen (James) Adolphus (Dickenson) Oughton (1720–1780), later [22 Feb 1773] Sir<br />

Adolphus Oughton, KB, 27 th GMM, Scot, 1769–71. Resigned the GMship, AGL 1781, but re-elected GM, AGL,<br />

1791, resigning Nov 1813; 32 nd GMM, Scot, 1778–79. Due to his influence, Boys’ School established 1798. Joined,<br />

Myers, Charles Samuel, CBE, MD, FRS [6 May 1915] (13 Mar 1873–12 Oct 1946), Psychologist.<br />

Born in London, 13 Mar 1873, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Wolf Myers, Merchant, from a family chiefly concerned in<br />

commerce, and his wife, Esther Eugenie Moses, whose family provided powerful social, philosophical and musical<br />

interests.<br />

Educ at City <strong>of</strong> London School, Gonville and Caius Coll, Cambridge (BA, Natural Science Tripos, 1 st Cl, Parts I &<br />

II, 1893, 1895; Arnold Gerstenberg Student, 1896) and St Bartholemew’s Hospital, London (MB, 1898), but decided<br />

not to practise medicine, but went with the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait, led by Alfred<br />

Cort Haddon, FRS [qv, above]. Joined 2 colleagues in experimental studies <strong>of</strong> the natives and became much involved<br />

with ethnic music, but returned to Cambridge, 1902, helping William Hales Rivers Rivers, FRS [qv, below], to teach<br />

physiology <strong>of</strong> the special senses.<br />

Initiated, aged 22, as Student, Caius Coll, Cambridge, 5 Mar 1895, passed 30 Apr 1895 and raised 28 May 1895,<br />

Isaac Newton Univ. L. No. 859, Cambridge, resigning 30 Sep 1931. Joined 2 Ls.: 21 Feb 1903, Alma Mater L. No.<br />

1492, Cambridge, WM 1908, remaining a member until his death; and, 14 Jan 1896, Rahere L. No. 2546, London,<br />
