Kendal, KG, GCB, GCH, RFRS [30 Nov 1816], later [1831] HM Léopold I, King <strong>of</strong> The Belgians, 1831–65 (16 Dec<br />

1790–10 Dec 1865), born at Coburg, 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Francis (Frederick Antony), Duke <strong>of</strong> Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1750–<br />

1806), and his wife Countess Augusta Reuss-Ebersdorf (1757–1831), and brother-in-law <strong>of</strong> HRH Edward, Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Kent, KG [qv, above], who had married his sister Victoria in 1818, their only child being Queen Victoria (1819–<br />

1901). Died at Laeken, and succeeded as King <strong>of</strong> the Belgians by his 2 nd , but eldest surviving, son, Louis Philippe<br />

Marie Victor (1835–1909), as Léopold II.<br />

Not initiated, but his sister’s friend Dr De Schifferli who was a mason and member <strong>of</strong> L. Der H<strong>of</strong>fnung [Hope],<br />

Berne, Switzerland, proceeded by delegation <strong>of</strong> the L. to receive him, 6 Aug 1813, and later to pass and raise him<br />

privately, 1813, while Gen under Czar Alexander <strong>of</strong> Russia.<br />

Never attended any masonic meeting anywhere and despite claims to the contrary, never joined an English L. In<br />

1833, gave handsome gift to newly founded GO, Belgium, tried to use Freemasonry for political purposes but without<br />

any success.<br />

(1871–1940), as 27 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford and 10 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Balcarres, later KT, FRS [6 Nov 1924]. An earlier Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Crawford was a FRS: John Lindsay, 338 17 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford and 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Lindsay, PC, FRS [20 May 1663;<br />

Original] (1596–1678).<br />

Peerage <strong>of</strong> Scot, and Baron Wigan <strong>of</strong> Haigh Hall (1826), in the Peerage <strong>of</strong> the United Kingdom.<br />

As given in BP, 1999, 1716, under LINDSAY, Earl, but as Crawford-Lindsay in the RS’s <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fellows on its website, perhaps because he<br />

referred to himself as Crawford-Lindsay, as did also his successors, linking the two Earldoms together, as indicated in GEC, Vol. III, 519.<br />

So it would seem that the authors <strong>of</strong> The Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales’s L. No. 259, <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> Members (1910), rather anticipated the change <strong>of</strong> style when<br />

recording the date when he joined the L.<br />
