Robertson, John, FRS [17 Dec 1741] (1712–11 Dec 1776), mathematican.<br />

Published 1739 a Complete Treatise <strong>of</strong> Mensuration (2 nd edn, 1748) and 1747 Mathematical Instruments, which<br />

reached a 4 th edn, 1778; Asst Feb 1747 to James Hodgson (1672–1755) at the Royal Mathematical School at Christ’s<br />

Hospital, London, with an annual salary <strong>of</strong> £40. His Elements <strong>of</strong> Navigation . . . with a Treatise on Marine<br />

Fortifications (2 vols, 1754) dedicated to Christ’s Hospital became a popular work, and had 7 editions in fifty years.<br />

Resigned 1755 to become Head <strong>of</strong> the Royal Naval Academy, Portsmouth, but forced out by petty squabbles, he<br />

returned to London; early 1768 became Clerk, Librarian and Keeper <strong>of</strong> the Repository to the RS and lived in the<br />

Socy’s house in Crane Ct, <strong>of</strong>f Fleet Street. Made a corrected catalogue <strong>of</strong> the Norfolk Library, sorted the Flamsteed<br />

papers and generally improved the Socy’s Library and its archives. Published between 1750 and 1772 9 papers in<br />

Philosophical Transactions on mathematical and allied topics.<br />

When he died leaving a widow and 8 children, the Socy <strong>of</strong>fered support to her and 1 son.<br />
