and imagine…what if you were one of us
We are the men and women in white. White symbolizes purity
and cleanliness, a perfect way to describe such course! Imagine,
how many courses in La Salle University do meticulous
steps in hand washing Aside from that, do you often get to
meet up with a wide range of microorganisms and illnesses
in your course That is only in a Nursing program! Wearing
white is not a flashy display of a cool and clean uniform. It is
about the purity of your care and the clarity of your actions
for the good of others!
THE NEAT FREAKS. This is the common misconception about
nurses - “maarte” - for the fact that we wash and sanitize
our hands as often as you can or can not see,
or maybe bringing tissue papers which we
wipe in the surface which we
are about to get in contact
with. Well this might be
true, but the word is
not “maarte”; it is cautious.
There are lots
of microorganisms
which might cause
certain illness in
our environment
and as
health care
providers it
is best to
take care of
ourselves
so not to
c o n t a m i -
nate or harm others. You might not know what you are in
contact with.
BIG EYEBAGS+ LACK OF SLEEP= STRESS. If you are like us,
you will get use to this. Imagine a 11pm-7am shift It’s pretty
much tiring and stressful too! Plus you are not allowed to take
naps or sleeps during duty hours, so that will explain your
eyebags and lack of sleep.
When your at school, it is still quite the same. You sleep late
doing reports, studying and making NCP’s for your patients.
In a few weeks, you will look like the model from you know...
Stresstabs! This course is the perfect combination of stress
and more stress. But, if you love the course then that would
not be a problem.
GRADES AND HEARTBREAKS. They say, breaking up with
your love is hard (sob), but I tell you failing a subject and
retaking it is more heartbreaking! You see, this explains why
eyebags and stress govern our course. You take the risks if you
fail a subject or two, and the worst part is you will have to
suffer it again!
The subjects in our course are not that hard. But these do
not mean, they are easy either. All you have to do is be a
good and diligent student. Surely, you will succeed.
CARING IS LOVING. We are pretty much loving people. We
care for the sick and lonely, so we understand what some
patients feel. We give them a chance of happiness for their
wellness. It is a part of a therapy other than the medicines.
Empathy and sympathy are always our main
agenda when it comes to care.
Unlike the misconceptions
of snob
and grouchy as said by other people, the LSU nurses are
different. We are trained in the light of the Lasallian virtues
plus we are taught well on how to deal with others. So these
misconceptions are really not true (though these might be
true to some).
There are still many good qualities that nurses and student
nurses alike do have. These are just some of the generalized
ones which make the students in white different from the
other programs. A nursing course is not just about the fat
paychecks coming over from a distant land. It is about caring
people and making them well holistically.
Nursing is fun and cool yet stressful and tiresome. If you
would have just a day to be like us, you will know why.
But for now, I hope your eager minds are filled with a few
knowledge about our course and the people behind it. Next
time you meet a someone in white with eyebags and a face
still smiling as if nothing has happened, try to ask…are you
a nurse
