BY CHELOU MUGOT There’s no easy way for a student leader to fully serve and at the same time study. Things must always be in balance, time must always be managed, and in some instances, personal matters must be set aside in the service of the fellow students. But all these and other endeavors are all taken by heart with La Salle University’s Student Supreme Council President, Mr. Eulogio Fajardo so as to truly fulfill his duty. A student leader since then, Mr. Fajardo believes that serving has always been his passion. As he witnessed things during his first year here in LSU as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering student, he immediately had this desire to become a part of the student leaders’ circle. With the dedication he showed in helping his college with all its activities, Mr. Fajardo was appointed to become one of the leaders of ACES (Association of College of Engineering Students) when he became a sophomore. There, he was able to join numerous leadership training seminars, which according to him had really made him grasped the truth behind successful leadership, and that is, for one to become a good leader, he must first become a good servant. Mr. Fajardo’s eyes not only to the bright side of his chosen path but also to the downside of it. There, he savored the bittersweet experiences such as being the source of information to everybody particularly the students from his college, the one being relied of things, and then later being put to blame if everything wouldn’t work as expected. But these and other inevitable conflicts in a student leader’s life didn’t shake even a bit of Mr. Fajardo’s aspiration to serve. On his fourth year stay here in La Salle University, he gave another year of service as an appointee of the Student Supreme Council (SSC). It was the time when Mr. Fajardo revealed his immeasurable efforts and deep dedication before the student body’s eyes as he would be seen actively participating in every activity held by the council. These and the trust he gained out from his genuine service to the whole community of LSU then finally brought to where he is right now. “All I wanted was to serve my fellow students in any good way I can, and I never had the idea of becoming the SSC President one day.” This is one of the statements of Mr. Fajardo during our interview. Elected last March 2009, Mr. Fajardo started his role as the SSC president by joining in numerous Lasallian activities both within and outside the city during the summer vacation. At those days, he attended the Leadership Training Seminar Workshop held in LSU as one of the facilitators. After such, he was sent by the school to Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur together with other Lasallians to join the RTV13 (Return to Vaugirard 13). He also joined the Lasallian Youth Commission Executive Committee Seminar Workshop at La Salle Greenhills, Mandaluyong City. As Mr. Fajardo would say, the fun he got out from the travels he had was nothing compared to the life-changing realization he was able to capture those days, “Being a student leader nurtured by Lasallian virtues is an experience far different from the rest. It does not only develop your leadership skills alone but more importantly you as a person.” Mr. Fajardo shared that one thing he considers the best about being a student leader of La Salle is that one is able to help to those who are really in need through community extensions held by the school. All I wanted was to serve my fellow students in any good way I can, and I never had the idea of becoming the SSC President one day. - Eulo Fajardo Aside from those, Mr. Fajardo also expressed his gladness of being given the chance to learn things from other Lasallian student leaders he was able to spend moments with during those events. He also said that there are so many things one can learn from being a student leader that can never be learned by merely attending classes. From those experiences he had, Mr. Fajardo is now able to know that there’s so much more about being a student leader. One’s responsibility is not isolated within the corners of the campus he is leading. To be a student leader is to be a servant of the community and the whole nation as well. These together with the other learning he had have now built Mr. Fajardo as an ideal leader for all LSU’s students. Mr. Fajardo summarized everything by saying, “Lasallian is a lifestyle everybody must have, and one way to live such is through being a Lasallian student leader.” This young man with so much service to give also encourages all the Lasallian students to take efforts to rise from apathy for he believes that this will be the foundation for a better change to the whole Lasallian community.
