BY DANDIE SOMOSON “Give to the school what is due to the school and to the students what is due to them.” This line was from Br. Antonio Cesar Servando, FSC, the former Vice-President for Administration, and is dedicated to all working scholars in this university. This line serves as the working scholars’ living reminder for them to effectively do their responsibilities. Speaking of which, I know of a particular working scholar who takes this word with due commitment and fulfillment. He is Mr. Perfecto Timbao aka “Perfect”. Exaggerated as it may seem, but Mr. Timbao is reasonably a man of true service and genuine dedication. Thus, giving to the school what is due to the school is certainly what he does. Inarguably, working at the same time studying is indeed never an easy thing to do. Perennial stress and pressures would by far be running after you. But, Mr. Timbao could not help the need to work to continue his education. Like all working scholars, financial difficulty is the very reason why he is now continually grabbing the scholarship opportunity, though risks and sacrifices are inevitable and likely to come around. “I am already a working student even before when I was just in grade 3. I am already a working student even before when I was just in grade 3. Hence, I’m already used to work and study under pressure. -PERFECTO TIMBAO comes from a broken family much less being economically challenged. At a very young age, he experienced being left by his father. Thus, only his mother, who is incapable of landing a good job because of poor educational attainment, looked after him. But at present, he is away from her. However, this bitterness does not impede Mr. Timbao to continue dreaming. Rather, he still clings to hope and continues to believe that every cloud has a silver lining. June 2007 marked the beginning of Mr. Timbao’s journey towards greater achievements in life. He was enrolled in as a working scholar in La Salle University taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Financial Management. St. Benilde rooms 312 and 313 plus the veranda were his first areas of concern where he had to wake up as early as 4:30 in the morning just to make it certain that the rooms were clean, and that we, students, could have a better place for learning. During this time, Mr. Timbao’s sincere dedication to work was already manifested. He already showed a working performance that was larger than life. In fact he was given such a remark that among the SB rooms, his got the cleanest area. During the school year’s second semester, Mr. Timbao was assigned at the La Salle offices specifically the Languages, Social Sciences, Math and Science departments. Shortly after, he was promoted as the LS’ area leader. This time, his work was supposed to be only monitoring his co-working scholars in the said building, but since there was less number of working scholars, he remained cleaning the same offices, and monitoring his members. “I was grateful to be promoted as an area leader because it somehow implied that my superiors were happy with my performance. However, I could not help myself to be worried that time because it also meant another level of expectation,” he revealed. Mr. Timbao had been in his position for quite a time. Most likely his promotion motivated him more to work harder. Besides, in the school year 2007-2008, he was also elected as a P.I.O. of the working scholar organization which only proves his definite passion to serve. June 2009, just last month, a big change had happened to Mr. Timbao’s life as a working scholar. He was actually promoted as the team leader of the men working scholar which means to say that he is now the leader of all area leaders and men working scholars. This big promotion really took him by great surprise. “Never did I expect this to happen to me. I was truly overwhelmed the moment the decision was given. But then again, this calls for another set of challenges to face. I just hope that God will help me as He always does.” he confessed during the interview. Currently, he is now doing his best efforts to be a good leader to the men working scholars. It’s difficult, he admitted it but he would take the big challenge. “To all men working scholars, I really need your help and full cooperation this time. Let’s help one another in giving to the school what is due to the school. Let us work hand in hand to bring back the good image of the organization. Let’s prove to them that the working scholars of today are more responsible than of yesterday. Yes, I believe we can do it because I believe in each one of you!” Mr. Timbao’s heartfelt message to his co-working scholars. Indeed, Mr. Timbao is as busy as a beaver. Now, you might wonder about his academic performance. Well, if he has been working his fingers to the bone as a working scholar, the same is true as a university student. Though he is not that really academically inclined, but he justly makes it a point that his study is not forsaken. That is to say that he always allocates time for his study to cope with the university’s academic standard. Indeed, a man with a true passion to serve is a man worthy to be proud of. On behalf of the men working scholars, I would like to say that to you, Perfect, we are truly proud! tingogmagazine 21
