Maidstone Museum
unveils new East Wing
The new wing features eye-catching gold copper shingles
Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art
Gallery reopened following an extensive
£3m refurbishment and the
addition of a new East Wing by Hugh
Broughton Architects.
The museum houses a collection
of more than 600,000 artefacts and
specimens which help tell the story of
Maidstone and its people.
The new East Wing mixes contemporary
design with sensitivity for the
Grade II* listed building’s historic fabric
– part of which dates from 1561. Key
features include a new entrance facing
the high street and elevations that combine
frameless glazing with handcrafted
copper alloy shingles, creating a contrast
to the existing brick façades.
