KENDAL GOLF CLUB<br />

M NCS recently completed a<br />

major energy refi t of the Kendal Golf<br />

Club in Cumbria.<br />

NCS was selected to partner the<br />

golf club and help them reduce their<br />

energy use by 15 per cent within two<br />

years. As part of the project, NCS<br />

provided advice on all aspects of<br />

the golf club’s energy management,<br />

including the use of lighting and<br />

heating, as well as reducing ongoing<br />

maintenance costs.<br />

Kendal Golf Club is now achieving<br />

a reduction in consumption of<br />

21 per cent on electricity and 41 per<br />

cent on gas, providing a return on<br />

investment in 18 months.<br />

The club has exceeded its targets<br />

obtain funding via the Carbon Trust<br />

to implement the energy reduction<br />

project, which saw the installation of<br />

energy-efficient heating controls, as<br />

well as presence and light level controls.<br />

Inefficient lighting was also<br />

replaced with the latest design and<br />

technologies – with all parts approved<br />

for ECA tax rebate, providing additional<br />

savings for the golf club.<br />

“We initially aimed to reduce energy<br />

spend by 15 per cent, giving a return<br />

on investment within two years.<br />

However, we have completely exceeded<br />

this target and the golf club will see<br />

a return on investment within just 18<br />

months,” said NCS managing director<br />

Chris Norburn. “The club was able<br />

to operate as usual during the implementation<br />

of new systems and the<br />

installation was carried out with the<br />

minimum of disruption.”<br />

enabling us to reduce our energy consumption<br />

and, as a consequence,<br />

reduce costs," said Ian Clancy, club<br />

manager, Kendal Golf Club. "Our<br />

club has a long standing history, providing<br />

golfing facilities for over 100<br />

years, and we’re proud to boast the<br />

latest in energy effi cient technology.”<br />

NCS will continue to work with<br />

Kendall Golf Club throughout 2012<br />

to ensure the energy reduction currently<br />

being realised is maintained.<br />

hen the management<br />

at Stanningley Sports &<br />

W Amateur Rugby League<br />

Club in Leeds decided they wanted<br />

to free up some funds to invest in a<br />

new irrigation system, finding spare<br />

capital was a problem. Club administrator,<br />

Jon Norfolk, soon realised that<br />

cutting the club’s energy bills was<br />

a simple way of saving money and<br />

becoming more energy efficient.<br />

The £1.5m club has substantial<br />

energy overheads, and Norfolk<br />

knew that he needed to fi nd a way of<br />

reducing energy use without compromising<br />

on functionality.<br />

In order to understand where the<br />

club is using energy, Norfolk has just<br />

started using British Gas's Business<br />

Energy Insight, an online service<br />

which shows businesses how, when<br />

and where they are using electricity.<br />

With the help of smart meters, which<br />

accurately monitor how much energy is<br />

being used, businesses can put an end<br />

to estimated bills by only paying for the<br />

electricity they use.<br />

The service provides an online<br />

dashboard, which displays energy consumption<br />

in pounds and pence, putting<br />

businesses in control of their costs.<br />

It also provides support from account<br />

executives trained to help customers<br />

implement energy saving measures.<br />

Floodlights are one of the club’s biggest<br />

energy outputs. As the club is<br />

home ground for 19 teams of all<br />

ages, the floodlights can be on for<br />

15 hours a week during winter.<br />

switching off car parking lights when<br />

they aren’t needed could save a substantial<br />

amount. Vending machines<br />

also consume a surprising amount<br />

when left switched on overnight.<br />

“One of the main ways Norfolk<br />

could cut costs is by installing<br />

energy efficient lights. Compact fl u-<br />

orescents or LED lamps use up to<br />

80 per cent less energy than tungsten<br />

GLS lamps. In addition, when<br />

used indoors they don't need to be<br />

replaced as often, and, because<br />

these lights generate less heat,<br />

they put less strain on air conditioning<br />

systems. Also, to make sure his<br />

showers are as effi cient as possible,<br />

Norfolk should check that stored hot<br />

water temperature is kept at 60°C,<br />

which is the optimum.”<br />
