Charlie Smith and wife Janet, both
from Aruba, have been married 51 years.
The couple retired from Computer
Learning Center, an early personal
computer software education company
of which Charlie was president. They live
near Clemson, S.C. The Smiths spend
about three months every year in Aruba,
where Charlie is on the board of directors
of Costa Linda Beach Resort timeshare.
An amateur photographer, Charlie has
taken thousands of pictures of Aruba
and has produced a guide to the island.
Wayne Wavrek and wife Gloria
commute between homes in Chicago
and Tampa, where Wayne caught the
Lafayette–Lehigh telecast hosted by
Mike Quig ’86. “A better game to
watch” was Wayne’s analysis of the Yale
game; he met Dr. Tom Moyer at the
pregame tailgate. Wayne is proud of his
Chicago granddaughters, Hannah and
Paige, candidates for Lafayette’s classes
of 2018 and 2020, respectively.
Larry Knudsen is happily retired.
Although they sold their bed and
breakfast, Larry and Sue still live in Snow
Hill, Md. He successfully underwent the
Whipple procedure, a treatment for earlystage
pancreatic cancer patients. “After a
long haul through territory I never
thought I would see, I am on the mend.”
When Larry told Sue the doctor said he
would be a new man in a few months, she
asked, “Can it be George Clooney” Best
wishes for a speedy recovery. Larry’s email
address is Larry@inntours.com.
Tom Rennert, who lives in mid-
Vermont, is a dedicated golfer, playing
100 rounds per year. This year, Tom got
in four rounds before April 1 and shot
a midseason 84. In addition to golf and
managing his 17-year-old windshield
repair franchise, Tom attends Leopard
football games in New England and
Middlebury hockey matches. He looks
forward to a visit to Oregon this
summer to see his 5-year-old
granddaughter, Vivian. Tom can be
reached at tomrennert@gmail.com.
Dick Booth writes: “My son
married a young lady from China
last year, and they reside in Shanghai,
where he runs a small business teaching
English.” Though Dick retired three years
ago, he remains a Class II township
supervisor and fills his schedule with
15 grandchildren and golf. Dick’s
Phil Bollman, Al Siegel, Dr. Marion
Vujevich, and their spouses enjoyed
an extended trip to the Far East.
According to Al Siegel, Michael
Ellis ’14, first recipient of Class of 1960
Marquis Scholar Award, excels in class
and is active on campus. Michael—from
Mercer Island, Wash.—writes: “The
scholarship gave me the opportunity to
attend the sort of institution I could only
have dreamed of, and I hope in the future
to return the favor to many young
students who are also in need.” The class
is $150,000 short of our goal to fund two
Marquis Scholars for four years. Contact
John Cunningham passed away
March 24. John grew up in Garden
City, N.Y. An economics and business
graduate, he worked for more than
30 years at CIBA in Ardsley, N.Y. He
enjoyed skiing, golf, and paddle tennis
and organized many Phi Delt
gatherings. Wife Barbara, three
children, eight grandchildren, and
a sister survive him. Among those
attending the funeral in Pleasantville,
N.Y., were fraternity brothers
Bill Buehler (best man at John’s
wedding), George Halak (who spoke
at the service), Warren Eberlein, Fred
