I are moving to Deltura Estates in Fort
Myers, Fla. Dot is getting her personal
trainer’s license. Due to timing of our
move, I’m not sure yet if I’ll make the
reunion. Hope so!”
Bruce Vakiener writes: “Since
our graduation, I have been an active
volunteer with local fire departments
and EMS squads. Since 2000, I have
focused on being an emergency medical
technician. Recently, I was named
Volunteer of the Year by Hecktown
Volunteer Ambulance Corps of Lower
Nazareth (Pa.) Township.” In
November, Bruce was also recognized
with an Outstanding Service Award by
Lehigh Valley Health Network for his
“commitment to excellence” in
responding to an emergency call for an
acute myocardial infarction patient.
“The hospital officials told us he had
less than a 20% chance of living, but our
great response saved his life.”
Mechanical engineer Bill Ballek,
a Korean War veteran, retired from
Bethlehem Steel in 1997. “This past
year was my 49th year as a ski
patrolman at Camelback Mountain
Resort in Pennsylvania. I also spent
a week in Breckenridge, Colo., skiing
with my daughter, Sue. My wife, Joan,
quit skiing several years ago. Daughter
Lisa became disabled while a
sophomore at Bloomsburg College
in 1983. She is a resident of Good
Shepherd–Bethlehem and enjoys
getting out a few times a year for
adaptive skiing. Skiing has kept me
fit and on the go.”
Walter “Terry” Lutz Jr. writes:
“I live in Hartford, Wis., and we have
a place in Eagle River. My wife, Sylvia,
and I have three children and five
grandchildren. After graduation,
I moved to Indiana and worked at
Haynes Stellite for 13 years. In 1974,
I moved to Wisconsin then bought
Signicast in 1981. Signicast grew to
become world leader in investment
castings, with 680 employees and $150
million in sales. I sold Signicast and am
finally about to retire.” Previously a
pilot, Terry now enjoys boating and
jet skiing. He plans to write a book,
tentatively titled In Pursuit of
Manufacturing Excellence.
Tom Burns wrote: “Nancy and I
attended the Bolder and Fresher Tour
2011–2012 of Bill O’Reilly and Dennis
Miller in December in Orange County,
Calif. The duo had been to Easton
earlier, which prompted me to
assemble some historical data on
the Marquis de Lafayette and hand
it to Bill at the post-show photo op.
I wore the Lafayette shirt from the
45th reunion. Bill recalled the trip to
Easton and promised to look into some
noteworthy patriots such as Lafayette,
Morris, Madison, and others for a
future book.”
Fred Toback and wife Sue moved
to Colorado in 2003 after his
retirement from National Labor
Relations Board in Washington, D.C.
Ken Poppe and Mary, who are
continuing their teaching careers,
have a new grandson.
