1980<br />

In late March, Doug<br />

Burcin headed to<br />

northern British Columbia for heliskiing<br />

with wife Kim and son Kyle.<br />

Chris Hess, who spent time in<br />

Alta and Snowbird in Utah, is<br />

employed by Harrington Hoist<br />

in Pennsylvania.<br />

In February, Susan Whitten<br />

Conners, Susan Cassin Wilson,<br />

Daryl Beth Ganss, and Susan<br />

Sheehan Lee caught up over a meal<br />

overlooking Rittenhouse Square in<br />

Philadelphia. Susan Conners and Susan<br />

Sheehan Lee are going through the<br />

stress of having high school seniors,<br />

while Susan Wilson and Daryl Wilson<br />

have passed through that trial for the<br />

last time.<br />

Francey Kanengiser Burke,<br />

who was host and coordinator of the<br />

Jersey Shore co-telecast of Mikhail<br />

Gorbachev’s speech at <strong>Lafayette</strong>, said<br />

local high school students were riveted<br />

by the address. News stories appeared<br />

on evening and morning broadcasts of<br />

the local NBC affiliate (see photos<br />

online). In October 2011, Rotary<br />

International President Kalyan Banerjee<br />

presented Francey with a vocational<br />

service award at the New Jersey Rotary<br />

Vocational Assembly. She was one of<br />

only five recipients from the state<br />

(see photos online). She and husband<br />

Dave ’79 are thrilled son Ryan was<br />

accepted to <strong>Lafayette</strong>’s <strong>Class</strong> of ’16.<br />

Thomas J. Reed Jr. passed away<br />

New Year’s Day as the result of injuries<br />

sustained in a car accident. An<br />

economics and business graduate,<br />

Thomas was a resident of Dallas, Pa.<br />

Mike Gagliardi visited<br />

1981 Geoff Bermingham in<br />

Telluride, Colo., in late March (see<br />

photo online). Geoff is working on<br />

his master’s. Mike was re-elected to<br />

his fifth term on the board of directors<br />

of Western Winter Sports Reps<br />

Association, and Never Summer<br />

Snowboards continues to grow.<br />

Chad Everhart ’97, a good friend<br />

of Mike’s, is a Burton Hardgoods<br />

manager. Dodie Ownes works on<br />

content development and physical and<br />

virtual events with Library Journal and<br />

School Library Journal and is editor of<br />

SLJTeen, a semimonthly newsletter for<br />

teen and young adult services librarians.<br />

Mike and Dodie’s son, Paul, is a junior<br />

at Golden (Colo.) High School, is<br />

involved in mixed martial arts, and<br />

takes guitar and piano lessons (see<br />

photo online).<br />

Dr. Jerry E. Berland has operated<br />

on soldiers whose eyes were injured<br />

during Desert Storm and taught<br />

ophthalmology residents as assistant<br />

clinical professor at Louisiana State<br />

University School of Medicine in New<br />

Orleans. A pediatric ophthalmologist<br />

and partner in Thomas Eye Group,<br />

Atlanta, Jerry is also assistant chief<br />

of ophthalmology at Children’s<br />

Health Care. He previously served as<br />

president of the group, which includes<br />

22 ophthalmologists and eight offices,<br />

and he continues as a member of the<br />

executive committee. Jerry, who was<br />

featured on the <strong>Lafayette</strong> website, is<br />

married to Laila Krauss ’84 Berland.<br />

Joe Connolly reports son Michael<br />

is getting married Sept. 15 and will<br />

move to Asheville, N.C. Joe is engaged<br />

to Joanie Sabold. The wedding most<br />

likely will be in April or May.<br />

On March 9, Washington, D.C.,<br />

alumni gathered for a wine tasting to<br />

celebrate the 186th anniversary of<br />

<strong>Lafayette</strong>’s charter (see photo online).<br />

Brownlee, Rich Schreiber, Scott<br />

Beisler ’80, Mark Goldstone, and<br />

Laura Isken Doyle had a wonderful<br />

time catching up. Rich’s son, Eric,<br />

was set to graduate from McGill in<br />

May, while daughter Hannah was in<br />

her junior year at Emory. Mark’s<br />

children, Jessica and Corey, were a<br />

first-year student and a junior at<br />

Syracuse, respectively. Steven and<br />

Denise’s son, Will, was a first-year<br />

student at Cornell and a member of<br />

crew team, while son Andrew was a<br />

junior at University of Virginia. Scott’s<br />

son, Mark, is a <strong>Lafayette</strong> ’06 alumnus,<br />

and daughter Allison is a James<br />

Madison University ’08 alumna.<br />

Laura’s children, Tommy and<br />

Katherine, were in 10th grade,<br />

Claire was in her first year at Bucknell,<br />

and Matt was a junior at Harvard<br />

and a pitcher on the baseball team.<br />

Laurie Bell, Janet Edelstein<br />

Bortnick, and Mark Goldstone are<br />

enrolled in Alumni Summer <strong>College</strong><br />

on the Hill from July 19-22.<br />

Darryl Clark lives in<br />

West Orange, N.J.<br />

He and wife Michele have two sons—<br />

Julian, who was a junior in high<br />

school, and Kevin, who finished his<br />

sophomore year at Dartmouth. Kevin<br />

was a member of the 2011 collegiate<br />

championship rugby sevens team. In<br />

celebration of his 50th birthday,<br />

Darryl, who still plays bass, jammed<br />

with jazz legend Nat Adderley Jr.,<br />

with Paul Rumore, fellow Sigma<br />

Phi Chi, in attendance. Darryl works<br />

at Nexenta Systems, an open source<br />

storage company, and sees Bill Griffin<br />

when he visits his Houston office.<br />

Bill, who has worked for 20 years with<br />

NASA’s shuttle program, is helping<br />

wind things down before moving on<br />

to the “next great thing.”<br />

Paul Rosen is a clinical associate<br />

professor at University of Maryland<br />

School of Dentistry. Paul has written<br />

two textbook chapters and numerous<br />

articles on dentistry. He enjoys<br />

reading, exercising, and coaching<br />

his kids.<br />

James Valenti was named to the<br />

board of directors of T&M Associates<br />

in Middletown, N.J. T&M provides<br />

engineering and planning solutions.<br />

Jim has served as senior vice president<br />

and chief legal officer of the firm since<br />

2010. He is also a gubernatorial<br />

appointee and current president<br />

of New Jersey Board of Professional<br />

Engineers and Land Surveyors. He<br />

lives in Colts Neck, N.J.<br />

Dennis Zetterberg and family<br />

moved to Texas after he was named<br />

team manager for process control<br />

and safety system group at Chevron.<br />

Dennis is active in Woods Edge<br />
