12 Westminster: Your choice for secondary school // Apply online at www.westminster.gov.uk/admissions Year 11 pupil, The Grey Coat Hospital « Admissions authorities and admission criteria The admissions authority for each school is responsible for setting its admission arrangements and deciding which children are given priority for a place in accordance with the published admissions criteria. Details of the admissions criteria for Westminster schools are listed at the end of the section for each school. For primary to secondary transfer, the offer of places will be co-ordinated by the LA under the Pan- London Co-ordinated Admissions System to ensure that no child is offered more than one school place in the initial allocation round. Westminster Council is the admission authority for the two community schools in Westminster (Pimlico and Quintin Kynaston). This means that the LA decides which children will be offered places in accordance with the schools’ admission criteria. You are advised to apply for your nearest community school and/or Academy as one of your preferences on the LA’s application form to help ensure that your child is offered a suitable school place on 3rd March 2008. As a parent you have a duty to ensure that your child receives appropriate education and you will be required to satisfy the council that you have made satisfactory arrangements for your child's education from September 2008. For the five voluntary aided schools and two Academies in Westminster, the governors of the school have responsibility of deciding which children will be offered the available spaces in line with the schools’ admissions criteria. When considering applying to a voluntary aided (church) school, it is worth bearing in mind the following: • church schools usually take church attendance and commitment into consideration • attendance at a voluntary aided primary school does not guarantee acceptance at secondary schools of the same denomination. The Grey Coat Hospital, St Augustine’s, St George’s, The St Marylebone and Westminster City Schools each have a supplementary form to complete which is available from the schools. If you wish to apply for these schools you must complete the school’s supplementary form - failure to do so will mean that the school governors will not be able to consider your application.

Under the Pan-London Co-ordinated Admissions System, Westminster residents can apply for schools anywhere in London on the Westminster Common Application Form. Detailed information about schools outside Westminster and their admission arrangements will be available from the schools direct and the Local Authority in which they are situated. Contact details for each of the boroughs neighbouring Westminster are given on page 65. Please remember to check the admission arrangements for any such school to assess whether you are likely to be offered a place. You may also be required to complete a supplementary form for the school. Private/Independent (Fee-Paying) schools If you wish to consider private or independent schools, further information can be obtained from the Independent Schools’ Council Information Service who can be contacted by telephone on 0870 343 5363, email: southeast@iscislse.co.uk, website: www.findanindependentschool.co.uk. You will usually be required to pay fees to attend such a school. These schools do not form part of the Pan-London Co-ordinated Admissions System and you must apply to them direct.
