In addition to these, schools offer a variety of other<br />
subjects, details of which can be found in each<br />
individual school prospectus.<br />
Eight of the nine <strong>Westminster</strong> schools and Academies<br />
have sixth forms, and pupils can stay beyond Year 11<br />
into Years 12 and 13. The exception to this is St<br />
George’s RC School, which does not have a sixth form,<br />
but pupils from St George’s can continue their studies<br />
at sixth form college, further education college, or the<br />
sixth form of another school through the sixth form<br />
partnership. The sixth form at <strong>Westminster</strong> Academy will<br />
begin in September 2007.<br />
All <strong>Westminster</strong> schools are comprehensive schools,<br />
which means they admit children of all levels of ability.<br />
Three of our schools offer a small number of places<br />
each year to pupils with an aptitude in a specialist<br />
subject:<br />
• Grey Coat Hospital – up to 15 places for modern<br />
foreign languages<br />
• St Marylebone – up to 12 places for performing arts<br />
• Pimlico – up to 21 places on the special<br />
music scheme.<br />
All schools offer courses leading to General Certificate<br />
of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations in all the<br />
main subjects. As well as GCSE, schools offer a range<br />
of vocational qualifications known as General National<br />
Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs).<br />
Pupils are tested in English, Mathematics and Science<br />
at the end of Key Stage 3 (Year 9). During Year 9,<br />
decisions are made about a range of core and optional<br />
subjects leading to GCSE or related vocational<br />
qualifications (GNVQ). Pupils will be entered for public<br />
examinations provided they have completed the course<br />
work. Should a school decide that a pupil should not<br />
be entered for a subject they have studied, parents will<br />
be consulted before this decision is made.<br />
The examination results for all the schools in each area<br />
are published centrally by the government. These are<br />
called Secondary School Performance Tables and you<br />
can obtain a free copy of the performance tables for<br />
<strong>Westminster</strong> (or any other area) by contacting the<br />
Department for Children, Schools & Families (DCSF)<br />
