Focus on the classroom
“Teaching is very good or excellent in one third of
lessons. In many lessons, teachers are enthusiastic and
make the work interesting and fun.” Ofsted 2004
• Teaching at KS3 is in ability sets for Maths,
Science and Languages, with smaller class
sizes in these subjects, and also in English and
Design Technology.
• Baseline data is used to track and monitor all
students from entry to QK. Parents are informed of
all progress and early intervention strategies will be
discussed to support issues at termly meetings.
• Study support activities are available in all GCSE
subjects, as well as for KS3 subjects.
Inclusion/Special Needs
• We expect many gifted and talented students
to take exams in Year 10 or earlier, in Maths,
Community Languages, and ICT. Those gifted in
the Arts are encouraged to attend a range of extracurricular
activities on offer. Gifted and talented
mathematicians are encouraged to join our
Saturday maths school.
• Social Inclusion: we support students with literacy
weaknesses. Whilst having a Learning Support
Unit, however we do not have a specialist provision
for behavioural difficulties.
Focus on the outside world
“The wealth of cultures and faiths in the school is
valued, respected and appreciated by all teachers and
students. The racial harmony and very good
relationships give the school a special character and
contribute to its very good ethos.” Ofsted 2004
• In the Arts, we have a range of links to theatre
companies, including an on-site professional theatre
company. We aim to involve students with a wide
range of practitioners on and off site.
• In our specialist areas, we have a range of
academic and industrial practitioners working
alongside students: in classrooms, through
workplace visits, and in video-conferencing activities
led by university academics.
• We use a range of adults as mentors to our
students, to support the learning process.
• Links abroad include language and ski trips to France
and Switzerland and a geography trip to Spain.
• We have a wide range of sporting fixtures, including
basketball, football and athletics, making use of our
recently refurbished and upgrading sports facilities.
• As an Extended School, our after-school youth
club provides a range of activities and lifelong
learning skills and has continued to increase its
intake of students. Young people in Years 7-13 are
welcome to join, and those currently attending the
after school youth club have gained invaluable
skills and knowledge and are enjoying what the
club has to offer.
Discipline and welfare
“...The school supports students’ academic and
personal development extremely well and the quality
of care is excellent.” Ofsted 2004
• Uniform is compulsory.
• Hard work is praised and rewarded, but we do not
tolerate poor behaviour, and will exclude anyone
who damages other students’ learning.
Linking home with school
• We have a home–school contract, a weekly
newsletter, and expect parents to attend two
progress review days and one parents evening
every year, to discuss their child’s learning.
• We also have a full time Home–School Liaison
Officer and Education Welfare Officer.
