Westminster Academy is a new all ability independent (non–fee-paying) school for 11-19 year olds, with places for up to 1175 students. It opened in September 2006. The school was built as part of central government’s Academy programme, supported by Westminster Local Authority. It is run by the Westminster Academy Trust and has a Board of Governors drawn from a range of interests, as in any school. The school is independent but plays a full role in the delivery of education in Westminster, particularly post 14. The vision for the school sees it at the heart of the community, playing a valuable role in raising community aspirations, especially those of north Westminster (Church Street, Queens Park, Harrow Road and Westbourne Green). The Academy provides a broad and balanced education and also offers the specialism of International Business and Enterprise, which is integrated within all aspects of the curriculum. It is the lead school in Westminster in relation to this specialism. It will be a five minute walk from Royal Oak Underground station. The Academy building is designed to provide a superb environment for students. It offers a flexible learning environment of the highest standards and exciting learning and sporting facilities, including a new sports hall. This is combined with the latest cutting edge information and communications technology (ICT). The intention is also to make a range of these facilities available for the community to use outside of school hours. The Academy opened in September 2006 in the Penfold Street building which was formerly the Marylebone Lower House site of North Westminster Community School. It moved into the new building on Harrow Road in Summer 2007. The sixth form opens in September 2007. Focus on the classroom Life for students at the Academy is exciting and challenging. Through an innovative curriculum, young people are equipped with the skills to be confident, independent and successful learners. These skills are key in assisting them to learn successfully throughout their lives. Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, modular work is based on the National Curriculum programmes of study. Students are able to follow both academic and vocational courses. At post 16, the International Baccalaureate and A’ level courses, along with a rich strand of BTECs and technical qualifications in ICT will be offered. There is a wide-ranging extra curricular programme designed to promote self-confidence and team work. The Academy’s specialism of International Business and Enterprise and use of ICT are integrated and embedded within every aspect of both the academic and social curriculum. The approach to learning will focus on developing five broad areas of competence; Learning, Citizenship, Information Skills, Managing People and Managing Situations. The Academy is a ‘healthy school’ and values strengths of students’ home languages, cultures and faiths. International Business and Enterprise Specialism The specialism of International Business and Enterprise threads through all aspects of the curriculum. Seven languages are currently taught and students are encouraged to take early GCSEs in other home languages. All teaching, both national curriculum-based and of the specialism, is based on the principles of enterprise learning. Students develop the ability to tackle problems, take initiative, persevere, be flexible and work in teams. A wide range of work or business related learning experiences are provided and business partners are actively involved in planning these activities. Focus on the outside world Business partners are involved in developing exciting new work experience opportunities both inside and outside of the Academy environment. Through internship in local businesses at Key Stage 4, students will develop into self reliant, pioneering and ambitious employees of the future.
