3.5 Summary<br />
We have presented a face detection algorithm <strong>for</strong> color images using a skin-tone color<br />
model <strong>and</strong> facial features.<br />
Our method first corrects the color bias by a lighting<br />
compensation technique that automatically estimates the reference white pixels. We<br />
overcome the difficulty of detecting the low-luma <strong>and</strong> high-luma skin tones by applying<br />
a nonlinear trans<strong>for</strong>m to the Y C b C r color space. Our method detects skin<br />
regions over the entire image, <strong>and</strong> then generates face c<strong>and</strong>idates based on the spatial<br />
arrangement of these skin patches.<br />
It then constructs eye, mouth, <strong>and</strong> boundary<br />
maps <strong>for</strong> detecting the eyes, mouth, <strong>and</strong> face boundary, respectively. The face c<strong>and</strong>idates<br />
are further verified by the presence of these facial features. <strong>Detection</strong> results<br />
on several photo collections have been demonstrated. Our goal is to design a system<br />
that detects faces <strong>and</strong> facial features, allows users to edit detected faces (via the user<br />
interface shown in Fig. 3.24), <strong>and</strong> uses these detected facial features as indices <strong>for</strong><br />
identification <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> retrieval from image <strong>and</strong> video databases.<br />
