at the boundaries of facial features. For the face boundary <strong>and</strong> the nose, the external<br />

energy is computed by the maximum magnitude of vertical <strong>and</strong> horizontal gradients<br />

from range maps. These two facial features have steeper borders than others. For<br />

features such as eyes <strong>and</strong> the mouth, the external energy is obtained by a product<br />
