eyebrows, eyes, nose, <strong>and</strong> mouth. We can see that the external facial components<br />

play an important role in recognition, <strong>and</strong> the Fourier descriptors provide compact<br />

features <strong>for</strong> classification because the dimensionality of our feature space is lower (see<br />

Table 5.2) compared to those used in eigen-subspace methods. Figure 5.18 shows the<br />

three examples of misclassification in a leave-one-out test <strong>for</strong> the facial component<br />

set T 1 using all the frequency components. The false matching may result from the<br />
