V. Our <strong>System</strong> Design <strong>and</strong> Implementation<br />

V.A. Overview<br />

The system designed <strong>and</strong> implemented for this project is called the license plate<br />

recognition / speed detection (LPR/SD) system. The system receives two inputs. One input<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> live video taken <strong>of</strong> passing vehicles traveling down a throughway. The second input<br />

is the speed <strong>of</strong> passing cars obtained from a radar gun. The LPR/SD system processes these<br />

inputs, <strong>and</strong> outputs a computer file. The file contains information on passing cars including their<br />

license plate number, the speed they were traveling, <strong>and</strong> the time <strong>and</strong> date they passed.<br />

Our LPR/SD system is physically placed on the side <strong>of</strong> a throughway. It continuously<br />

monitors passing traffic. The system is composed <strong>of</strong> five main components as depicted in the<br />
