VII. State of the Art Commercial Systems
One of the first traffic radar systems was built by Automatic Signal Company for the
Connecticut State Police in 1947. These early radar units were based on heavy, bulky vacuum
tube technology and consisted of three parts; a 45 lb. box containing the transmitter-receiver, a
strip-chart recorder used to produce a permanent record, and a calibrated analog meter to provide
a reading in miles per hour. Originally, the transmitter-receiver was mounted on a stand-alone
tripod or it was bolted to the hood of the patrol car. It is interesting to compare this description
with figure 52, which shows today’s technology.
