The Importance of Layering Riding a motorcycle can expose you to severe extremes in weather and conditions. In dressing for a ride, the goal is to keep the body at a comfortable temperature and humidity level through a range of scenarios; from long periods of inactivity, TPG Basegear pg. 4 to sweat-filled moments of adrenalin, or hourslong workouts wrestling a bike through cross winds or over a goat path. Developing your own personal layering system makes gearing up for a ride much simpler. It is as easy as 1,2,3. The first thing you need is a base layer that wicks perspiration from the skin and transports it through to the exterior of this layer. To do this effectively your base layer should fit fairly snugly against your skin. Second is the insulating layer. Your body operates at around 99 degrees; this is the layer that retains that heat. This layer should also be breathable. You want that perspiration from the first layer to keep moving away from your body. If you find yourself either overdressed or underdressed it is usually the middle layer that gets addressed; through addition/subtraction, zipping or unzipping. Third is the outer layer, the physical barrier between you and that cruel (weather) world out there. Either blocking the wind from taking away the warmth held in the second layer or letting the wind through to dump heat and moisture by way of vents or mesh material when heat becomes your enemy and not your friend. Finally, keeping rain out but allowing perspiration from inside to escape. So, once you have things set-up for yourself, dressing for a ride gets pretty simple. A thin base layer will work in all conditions, hot or cold, wet or dry. The middle layer can vary from nothing or a very thin breathable layer, to multiple fleeces or a heated liner. Finish with your trusty motorcycle jacket containing protection against the weather and the road.
