Motorcycle Electrical Connections Whether you are looking to power a particular electrical device or to create an electrical port for distributing power to various devices and accessories, this is the section for you. We carry a wide range of cables, adaptors, and complete kits. Start with this electrical connector sampler: Powerlet style connectors: these connectors conform to a worldwide standard, they provide a vibration proof “snap-fit,” and can handle high current loads. They are compatible with factory connectors found on BMW, Ducati, Triumph, and KTM motorcycles. Cigarette sockets or automotive power ports: these are commonly found Powerlet socket Cigarette socket in automobiles and thus many cell phones, GPS,’ and radar detectors come with chargers that use this connector. Due to a lack of a manufacturing standard they are often susceptible to vibration, have a loose fit, and are not rated for high currents such as heated apparel. Mini USB SAE USB connector Micro USB Coax USB, mini USB, and micro USB connectors: are used for connecting to and powering most high-tech devices such as smart phones, GPS,’ tablets, and mp3 players. SAE connectors: the plug and socket are identical. These are commonly used with battery maintenance or charging systems. Coax or barrel connectors: are becoming the preferred connector for heated clothing. Our protective sheathing, heat shrink tubing, Posi-loc connectors and more are on pages 54–55. Why Powerlet Connectors Think of a Powerlet socket on your bike much the same as an electrical wall socket in your house. This is what you plug electric things into. Once you have a Powerlet socket installed on your bike, all the adaptors below are just a snap-fit away. Cigarette sockets are for electronics that come with a car charger, coaxial connectors are for heated gear, SAE connectors for use with battery chargers, and three sizes of USB connectors for your smart phones, GPS,’ tablets, and MP3 players. Complete Kits: the first step is to get electricity from the source, your battery, to a spot convenient for plugging in your “stuff.” These kits are complete circuits terminating in the socket of your choice and include the following features: ◆ Weatherproof ◆ Ring terminals to connect to the battery or fuse panel Panel Mount vs. Cable Mount: Choose panel-mount sockets for flush mounting and for use with brackets. Cable-mount sockets are great for tucking away when not in use and for difficult mounting situations where no bodywork exists. How about a power socket to charge your cell phone Or a set of heated grips or grip covers to keep your hands warm on cold rides Perhaps add some additional lighting for better vision and safety No matter what, if you choose to add additional wiring to your bike, just be sure it’s done right. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do a good job. First, follow safe workshop practices. Then be certain all wiring is securely connected and protected from chafing, excessive heat, or damage of any kind. With a little care and the right supplies, it’s easy to do a good job. Some of our favorite electrical workshop essentials are: Tech Flex Braided Sleeving: Protect wires, hoses, and tubing just like vehicle factories around the world. But don’t use that cheesy corrugated plastic wire conduit or worse, leave your wiring uncovered. Use genuine Tech Flex braided sleeving and build your own wire harnesses that are as good or better than the OEMs. (Page 55) Shrink Flex Professional Grade Heat Shrink Tubing: We love heat shrink tubing but not the cheapo shiny plastic kind, which is not at all durable and has a very poor shrink ratio. Use Shrink Flex heat shrink for bulletproof protection. This thick, rubbery tubing with its fantastic 3 to 1 shrink ratio, is the best we’ve ever tried. (Page 55) Rescue Tape: This remarkable self-fusing tape insulates 8,000 volts, resists 500° F, and provides a permanent waterproof seal. We’ve used this for everything from a roadside repair of a radiator hose, to fixing leaky house plumbing, and oh yeah, on motorcycle wiring too! (Page 55) Posi-Lock Connectors: These are the best The tubing can shrink down to 33% of its original size. wire connectors we’ve ever used. Strip the ends of the wire you want to connect, insert in the Posi- Lock, hand tighten the ends and you’re done. Posi-Locks are a dependable and they’re reusable! (Page 54) Posi-Tap Connectors: A common workshop task is tapping into a live wire to provide power for an electrical accessory. To do this properly used to take good soldering skills and a bit of time. Worse it permanently altered your motorcycle’s wire harness. With Posi-Taps you can do a better job in a fraction of the time, and you can later remove the tap leaving just a tiny pinhole in the insulation which is easy to repair. Posi-Taps are just brilliant! (Page 54) Posi-Twist connectors: This product allows you to quickly and securely connect multiple wires to one another in one location. For example, you might use a Posi-Twist to easily create multiple ground connections. Posi- Twists serve the same purpose as old-fashioned wire nuts but they’re much more secure and far better suited for use in vehicle wiring. (Page 54) Centech AP-1 & AP-2 Fuse Panels: A proper fuse panel is the only way to go once you’ve added more than one electrical accessory to your bike. Adding too many wires to your battery terminals is a great way to be sure your bike breaks down or worse! A good fuse panel keeps all your additional wiring tidy, secure, and easily identified. Also once you’ve installed a fuse panel it’s a snap to add or remove an electrical accessory.
