Bike Cleaning 101
Everyone takes pride in their motorcycle, right
Of course they do. You probably know more
than one rider who spends entirely too much
time trying to keep their bike looking perfect
and new. And the results aren’t always perfectlooking
either. So what’s the answer Like anything
else, if you have the right supplies and
know the right methods, you greatly reduce the
time and effort expended and radically increase
the results. Let’s start with a few essential tips
and then look at some ‘good tools and supplies.
Rule 1: Don’t let abrasive dirt damage your
bike’s finish. Unless you know for certain otherwise,
assume every rag, cleaning brush, film of
road grime, and more are all loaded with abrasive
particles that will scratch your paint,
chrome, windshield, and anything else if
rubbed. Before cleaning, flood the area with
clean, running water to float damaging abrasive
particles off your machine. This is especially
true for transparent plastic windshields, face
shields, and the like.
Rule 2: Don’t try to clean a hot bike that’s
been recently running or sitting in the hot sun
for any length of time. Cleaning chemicals are
designed to work on surfaces that are cool to
the touch. Always wash, clean, and/or polish in
the shade.
Rule 3: To keep every part of your bike clean
you’ll need an assortment of soft bristle brushes
to reach the various nooks and crannies. And if
at all possible, wash your bike after every ride
when the dirt is minimal and still easily washed
away. We’ve got some great ones. You can often
find decent brushes of many shapes and sizes in
the housecleaning section of your favorite
hardware or department store.
Now what do you need Here are some of
our favorite tools and supplies.
Park Tool Cleaning Brush Set, made in the

Kleen King Hot Pipes Cleaner is a the most
unique and effective chrome exhaust cleaner
we’ve ever tried. Remember the rule about not
cleaning hot bikes OK this is an exception.
Kleen King is designed to work on hot chrome
plated exhaust systems. It removes old cooked
on road dirt, boot marks, etc. better than you
might imagine. Follow the directions, don’t
burn your hands, and your chrome pipes will
