67 Some concerns for which seeking counseling is appropriate include difficulties interacting with other students or teachers, as well as: ➲➲Test anxiety ➲➲Learning challenges ➲➲Attention difficulties ➲➲Depression and other mood disturbances ➲➲Grief concerns ➲➲Eating concerns ➲➲Other emotional factors affecting academic performance The student counselor is available to help you to be a more successful student, and mature academically and interpersonally whilst at college. If you are not certain that the counselor can help you with your concerns, please ask, and the counselor will direct you to the appropriate person or office. Career Services Career Services is housed in the Student Development Centers. They provide resources and programs that assist students and graduates in establishing and advancing their careers in their degree fields. Counselors assist students to realize career opportunities, personal growth and academic success. These are addressed through numerous workshops, activities, personal consultation and career assessments. The Career Center staff may also assist students to find work placement, graduate employment, summer employment, and with alumni affairs after graduation. Financial Aid Students with financial aid needs (for laptops, meals, or others) should speak with a College Counselor or any student affairs staff. Student affairs staff will assist student to access resources available. There may also be opportunities for part-time employment at the college as well. Bus transportation is provided free of charge. Extra-Curricular Activities The Student Affairs department supports and enriches the college experience of Madinat Zayed Colleges and Ruwais Colleges students. The office works closely with Academic Services, college administration, and the student body to make sure that students have access to a wide range of resources supporting their education, including international opportunities. Educational Field Trips Field Trips and projects are a required component of HCT academic programs. If field trips occur outside the timetable hours or out of town, the college will inform the parents through written letters requesting their approval for these trips. Student must travel from and return to the location designated in the permission letters. No other arrangements, other than those agreed to in advance by parents/ guardians, are possible. Students who commit to a field trip must attend, or may
68 H I G H E R C O L L E G E S O F T E C H N O L O G Y be barred from travel during the academic year, if they do not show up. Field trips requests must be initiated by teachers via Academic Supervisors. Special Events The Student Affairs department oversees student activities, organizations and events. Student affairs staff work closely with academic departments, the Student Council, and community members to organize and participate in events outside the college, invite speakers to the campus, and other such activities that support student development and add to classroom learning. Health Services The Student Affairs office provides workshops and educational material for students concerning health and wellness issues. In the case of an emergency or if a student is seriously ill, student services staff will contact the student’s family to meet at the nearest hospital or to pick up the student. In case of emergency, first aid may be provided and an ambulance will be contacted. The college does not yet have a nurse or clinic on site, but this is expected to be added as soon as resources/space allow. Assistive Technology Learning Center and Special Needs Services Students with special needs may be eligible for extra support due to physical, medical or learning difficulties (such as chronic medical conditions, psychological conditions or physical impairments) that interfere with their participation in academic activities or other college involvement. If not revealed by NAPO, students with special needs are requested to identify themselves to counselors early in the academic year or when they know of any new special need, in order to avail of appropriate support. Students must provide professional documentation of their special need. The counselor may assess the student, refer the student for evaluation, assist the student in identifying available resources, or serve as a link between the student and academic departments. The Colleges’ provide reasonable academic accommodations for students with special needs. Student Handbook - 2012-2013
