The moderation of question papers is the primary process in quality assurance. A large<br />

percentage of NC(V) Level 4 (94%) <strong>and</strong> a sample of NC(V) Level 2 (25%) <strong>and</strong> 3 (29%)<br />

November 2012 <strong>and</strong> supplementary 2013 question papers, as well as a sample of April,<br />

August <strong>and</strong> November NATED question papers, were moderated.<br />

The moderation of revised Level 4 ISATs <strong>and</strong> four Level 3 ISATs, was concluded towards the<br />

end of 2011 <strong>and</strong> early in 2012.<br />

<strong>Umalusi</strong> moderated the internal continuous assessment (ICASS) of a sample of the NC(V)<br />

subjects at a sample of sites during May 2012. In September another sample of subjects<br />

was moderated on site as part of the evaluation of assessment system project of <strong>Umalusi</strong>.<br />

In September <strong>and</strong> October 2012, the educator <strong>and</strong> learner portfolios were moderated at<br />

provincial level. Although the same subjects were included in May <strong>and</strong> October, a<br />

substantially greater number of sites were included in the October exercise. <strong>Umalusi</strong> also<br />

moderated the internal assessment of a sample of NATED N1 - N3 subjects.<br />

During September, <strong>Umalusi</strong> moderators visited sampled sites to report on the conduct of<br />

the ISATs. This included monitoring the planning <strong>and</strong> progress of the conduct of the ISATs<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or the moderation of the completed tasks.<br />

Different phases of five examinations were monitored during the year. The National<br />

Technical Certificate (NATED Report 191) examinations were monitored during April,<br />

August <strong>and</strong> November 2012, while the NC(V) 2012 supplementary examinations were<br />

monitored during February/March 2012, <strong>and</strong> the NC(V) 2012 examinations during<br />

November 2012.<br />

In April 2012, <strong>Umalusi</strong> verified the marking of eight Level 2, seven Level 3 <strong>and</strong> eight Level 4<br />

subjects. In the case of the November 2012 examination, <strong>Umalusi</strong> verified the marking of<br />

55 NC(V) Level 4 question papers, as well as a sample of seventeen Level 2 <strong>and</strong> eleven<br />

Level 3 question papers. The marking of a sample of fourteen NATED subjects was also<br />

verified.<br />

The results of the following examinations were st<strong>and</strong>ardised:<br />

April, August <strong>and</strong> November Natural Sciences N1 – N3 examinations;<br />

November NC(V) examinations.<br />
